The seventeenth letter of the Hebrew Alphabet corresponding to this chapter is Peh- mouth. The Peh is the symbol of speech and Silence.
B'resheet 17:1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the L-RD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am G-d Almighty; (El Shaddai) Walk before Me, and be blameless.
We hear from the mouth of El Shaddai. He reaffirms His covenant with Abram and His promise of a son to Sarai after fourteen years of silence about it. Thirteen years after the birth of Yishma'el.
B'resheet 17:2 "And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly."
G-d reconfirmed His covenant with Abram.
B'resheet 17:3 And Abram fell on his face, and G-d talked with him, saying,
Abram worships G-d.
B'resheet 17:4-5 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. "No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
In a covenant a person name is often changed according to his character.
Abram- means "Exalted (high) father"
Abraham-means "father of a great multitude".
B'resheet 17:6 "And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you.
Mikhah (Micah) 5:1-4 "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity." Therefore, He will give them up until the time when she who is in labor has borne a child. Then the remainder of His brethren will return to the sons of Israel. And He will arise and shepherd His flock In the strength of the L-RD, In the majesty of the name of the L-RD His G-d. And they will remain, because at that time He will be great to the ends of the earth. And this One will be our peace.
B'resheet 17:7-8 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be G-d to you and to your descendants after you. And I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojourning, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their G-d."
An everlasting covenant and an everlasting possession - G-d means what He says the land of Canaan belongs to Abraham's descendants through SARAH not HAGAR.
B'resheet 17:9-14 G-d said further to Abraham, "Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants. A servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant."
That person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant - The covenant with Abraham and his descendants would still stand regardless of individuals who would break the covenant.
B'resheet 17:15-16 Then G-d said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her."
Sarai means "my princess"
Sarah means "princess"
Mother of nations - Sarah had two grand children Jacob and Esau. Esau became the father of the Edomites. Jacob name was changed to Israel and became the father of the Israelites.
B'resheet 17:17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?"
Sarah had passed menopause years earlier. Abram knows that her bearing a child is a physical impossibility. This is the first miracle birth in the Bible. It forshadowed another miracle birth, one even more miraculous: the birth of Yeshua.
How many have laughed at G-d over what he can and cannot do?
How many laugh when we tell them He has a Son too?
How old is Adonai (Divine understanding)?
