B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 37

B'resheet 37:1-2a Now Yakkov lived in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Canaan. These are the records of the generations of Yakkov.

This is a little reminder that the Israelites were not in possession of the land yet but were foreigners there.

B'resheet 37:2b-4 Yosef, when seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers while he was still a youth, along with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Yosef brought back a bad report about them to their father. Now Israel loved Yosef more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic. And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.

Varicolored tunic - This was most likely a long sleeved full length tunic that was worn by the upper class. It was not a garment of a person who did manual labor. It would have been made of various strips of colored cloth sewn together. It could be a garment of a ruler.

Yosef was chosen by G-d for greatness. Jealousy from others can be a terrible thing and usually comes from pride and self-centeredness. The father of pride is Satan. (Isa. 14:13-17) They hated their brother out of jealousy because he was a favorite of the father - Born in his old age. Yosef would have to suffer some before he would rule.

Yosef had however the support of HaShem.

The corresponding letter for this chapter is Samech -Divine presence and support; stands for Holy of Holies of the Temple.

Yosef is also a type of Yeshua HaMashiach and his actions help us look toward the Future Real Deal. Yeshua Ben Yosef was born at a much later time in history and could be declared as the Father's above "Old Age". We touched on this in other earlier studies. This does not mean He was not know by the Father before this or had not been to earth before this. During this time -AS Yeshua Ben Yosef -He stated that He is the Son of G-d and favored by the Father. Many hate Yeshua for the reason. Instead of believing this report they became jealous and hated him. He also gave bad reports about some of the leaders of former Israel at the time of His suffering here on earth. Yeshua would have to suffer but He will also rule in the far future. (Daniel 7:13-14)

Proverbs 30:2-4 Surely I am more boorish than any man, And I do not have the understanding of a man. Neither have I learned wisdom, Nor do I have the knowledge of the Holy One. Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know! NAS

Father...For you loved me before the foundation of the world. John 17:24

Isa. 40:21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundation of the earth?

See also Isaiah 53 Who has believed our report...to whom has the arm of the L-rd been revealed? ............. there is no beauty that we should desire him.....He is despised and rejected by men.....a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief....He carried our sorrows....yet we esteemed him stricken........Smitten by G-d and afflicted....He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities... the discipline for our peace was on Him...and by His stripes we are healed.

1 Peter 1:20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in G-d, who raised him from the dead and gave Him glory so that your faith and hope are in G-d.

We who believe are chosen by G-d

Eph. 1:4 He chose us in Him too before the foundation of the world...

B'resheet 37:5-11 Then Yosef had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. And he said to them, "Please listen to this dream which I have had; for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and lo, my sheaf rose up and also stood erect; and behold, your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to my sheaf. " Then his brothers said to him, "Are you actually going to reign over us? Or are you really going to rule over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. Now he had still another dream, and related it to his brothers, and said, "Lo, I have had still another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." And he related it to his father and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have had? Shall I and your mother and your brothers actually come to bow ourselves down before you to the ground?" And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.

Yosef's father knew the meaning of the dream and notice he kept it in his mind.

The eleven tribes represented by each of Yosef's brothers would all one day bow down to Yosef who would one day become great in Egypt. He would at this time become a salvation for them during a time of terrible famine. Yeshua will one day too become salvation to Israel during a time of famine and terrible trouble.

The moon and sun will bow down to the light of our future Messiah -Yeshua Ben David who will become great in Israel and then the whole world.

Isaiah 24:23 Then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed, For the L-RD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem And His glory will be before His elders. NAS

Isaiah 60:16-20 Then you will know that I, the L-RD(YHVH), am your Savior, And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. "Instead of bronze I will bring gold, And instead of iron I will bring silver, And instead of wood, bronze, And instead of stones, iron. And I will make peace your administrators, And righteousness your overseers. "Violence will not be heard again in your land, Nor devastation or destruction within your borders; But you will call your walls salvation, and your gates praise. "No longer will you have the sun for light by day, Nor for brightness will the moon give you light; But you will have the L-RD for an everlasting light, And your G-d for your glory. "Your sun will set no more, Neither will your moon wane; For you will have the L-RD for an everlasting light, And the days of your mourning will be finished.

Rev 21:22-24 And I saw no TEMPLE in it, for the L-rd G-d, the Almighty, and the LAMB, are its temple. And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of G-d has illumined it, and its lamp is the LAMB. And the nations shall walk by its light, and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory into it. NAS
