B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 3

Sometime before the events of chapter three occurred G-d created the angels. The most beautiful angel rebelled against G-d and lead 1/3 of the angels in revolt against G-d. That lead angel is called by several names. Ha Satan is the one we use most often, it means "the adversary". He and the other rebellious angels were cast out of heaven. The other fallen angels are now known as demons. So Ha Satan found his way to earth and the Garden of Eden to attack Mankind. Why? Because Man was made in G-d;s image. Did you ever get mad at someone and found a picture of them, (an image of them), and scribbled on it or tore it up? If you did, you attacked the person's image. Satan wants to destroy mankind because they are made in G-d's image. (See Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:12-19 for more on Ha Satan.)

B'resheet 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the L-RD G-d had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has G-d said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?"

the serpent - As we will see in the next few verses was possessed by Ha Satan.

Now if an animal started to talk to me, I would not be standing around calmly having a conversation with it. I would be 100 miles down the road before I stopped running. Havah, however, was unfazed by the serpent striking up a conversation with her.

more crafty - deceitful

to the woman - he attacked the weaker of the two.

has G-d said - he is insinuating there must be a mistake. He is trying to make her doubt her understanding of G-d's will.

Ha Satan often appears as an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. NAS

Satan can make a serpent talk? Yes Just like he will make the image of the beast talk in the future.

Rev 13:12-15 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. And he performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. And there was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast might even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. NAS

B'resheet 3:2 And the woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;

She is correct so far....

B'resheet 3:3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, G-d has said,' You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.' "

or touch it - Here is the first example of someone adding to the word of G-d. The Woman tried to change the Word of G-d. G-d did not say mankind could not touch it. He could have built a tree house in it or a tree swing in it. G-d only commanded him not to eat from it.

Please note - this is NOT an apple tree.

B'resheet 3:4-5 And the serpent said to the woman, "You surely shall not die! "For G-d knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like G-d, knowing good and evil."

not die - He picked the woman to help him in his cause to harm mankind. Notice He outright calls G-d a liar telling her she will not die if she eats of the fruit. Those that follow HaSatan today still follow the same kind of thing today. They try to say the Word of G-d is not to be taken literally. They continue to question His Word in their craftiness.

B'resheet 3:6-7 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

The crafty serpent was entered by HaSatan to trick the woman. The way of a snake and it's craftiness is mentioned in

Proverbs 30:18-19 There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Four which I do not understand: The way of an eagle in the sky, The way of a serpent on a rock, The way of a ship in the middle of the sea, And the way of a man with a maid.

The woman was deceived and seduced. She believed she was doing the right thing.

he ate - Adam was not deceived. He openly sinned and rebelled against G-d.

2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid, lest as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds should be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Messiah (Christ). NAS

1 Timothy 2:13-14 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Havah (Eve). And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being quite deceived, fell into transgression. NAS

knew that they were naked - the innocence of Gen 2:17 is replaced with guilt and shame.

B'resheet 3:8 And they heard the sound of the L-RD G-d walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the L-RD G-d among the trees of the garden.

sound of the L-RD G-d walking - The Father is Spirit. How can you hear the sound of a Spirit walking?

You can't. The Son is present.

B'resheet 3:9-11 Then the L-RD G-d called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the sound of Thee in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself." And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"

Of course G-d knew what happened. He could have stopped the woman before she bit into the fruit. He gave mankind a free will to reject His instruction not to eat of the fruit.

so I hid myself - It is impossible to hide from G-d. He is omnipresent.

Psalms 139:7-12 Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You art there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, "Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night," Even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.

B'resheet 3:12 And the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate."

From Adam and Havah to the present, mankind has been reluctant to admit their sins. When we refuse to repent we suffer G-d's judgment.

You gave to be with me - Adam tried to blame G-d for giving him Havah and also tried to blame the woman.

B'resheet 3:13 Then the L-RD G-d said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

Havah tried to pass the blame too.

B'resheet 3:14 And the L-RD G-d said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly shall you go, And dust shall you eat All the days of your life;

more than all cattle - all creatures were cursed the snake was the most cursed. This is referring to the physical snake for allowing its body to be used by Ha Satan.

Jeremiah 12:4 How long is the land to mourn And the vegetation of the countryside to wither? For the wickedness of those who dwell in it, Animals and birds have been snatched away, Because men have said, "He will not see our latter ending."

Romans 8:20-23 For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of G-d. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. NAS

B'resheet 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."

Enmity between snakes and women - Most women do not care for snakes.

This is referring to the spiritual serpent.

Who was the seed of the spiritual serpent (Ha Satan)? Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot (and all unbelievers)

Who was the seed of the woman? Yeshua (and all believers)

John 13:18-27 I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.' "From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He. "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me." When (Yeshua) Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me." The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. There was reclining on (Yeshua's) Jesus' breast one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore gestured to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking." He, leaning back thus on Jesus' breast, said to Him, "L-rd, who is it?" (Yeshua) Jesus therefore answered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him." So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. And after the morsel, Ha Satan then entered into him. (Yeshua) Jesus therefore said to him, "What you do, do quickly." NAS
