B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 47

B'resheet 47:1-6 Then Yosef went in and told Pharaoh, and said, "My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Kena'an; and look, they are in the land of Goshen." And he took five men from among his brothers, and presented them to Pharaoh. Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your occupation?" So they said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we and our ancestors." And they said to Pharaoh, "We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Kena'an. Now, therefore, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen." Then Pharaoh said to Yosef, "Your father and your brothers have come to you. The land of Egypt is at your disposal; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land, let them live in the land of Goshen; and if you know any capable men among them, then put them in charge of my livestock."

Sojourn - means to live, to dwell

The land of Goshen - also referred to as the land of Rameses. This is the eastern section of the Nile delta. It would have been good grazing land.

The best of the land - Pharaoh is repaying Yosef for what he has done for the nation by giving Yosef family prime real estate.

They become servants of Pharaoh's and look after his livestock because it was not a popular thing to do at the time. Today is it popular to be a shepherd of the sheep of Yeshua?

John 21:15-17So when they had finished breakfast, Yeshua said to Shim'on Kefa (Simon Peter), "Shim'on (Simon), Bar-Yochanan (son of John), do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, L-rd; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My lambs." He said to him again a second time, " Shim'on (Simon), Bar-Yochanan (son of John), do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, L-rd; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep." He said to him the third time, " Shim'on (Simon), Bar-Yochanan (son of John), do you love Me?" Kefa (Peter) was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "L-rd, You know all things; You know that I love You." Yeshua said to him, "Tend My sheep. NASU

The sons of Israel became servants of Pharaoh. We are to be servants of Yeshua and therefore servants of the Father.

Matthew 20:25-28 But Yeshua called them together and said, "Among the heathen, kings are tyrants and each minor official L-rds it over those beneath him. But among you it is quite different. Anyone wanting to be a leader among you must be your servant. And if you want to be right at the top, you must serve like a slave. Your attitude must be like my own, for I, the Messiah, did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many." TLB

1 Timothy 4:6-7 In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Yeshua HaMashiach, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following. NAS

We are more than His servants; we are friends of the Messiah.

James 2:23-24 And Abraham believed G-d, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness," and he was called the friend of G-d. NAS

John 15:14-16 You are My friends, if you do what I command you. "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. NAS

Back to Yosef:

B'resheet 47:7 Then Yosef brought his father Ya'akov and presented him to Pharaoh; and Ya'akov blessed Pharaoh.

Notice Ya'akov blessed Pharaoh. The lesser is blessed by the greater.

B'resheet 47:8-9 And Pharaoh said to Ya'akov, "How many years have you lived?" So Ya'akov said to Pharaoh, "The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty; few and unpleasant have been the years of my life, nor have they attained the years that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning."

How long did Yeshua Ben Joseph live while here? He was cut off around the age of thirty-three. Few and unpleasant were the years of His life while here on earth. The length of the life span of man got shorter and shorter as time went on.

B'resheet 47:10-12 And Ya'akov blessed Pharaoh, and went out from his presence. So Yosef settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered. And Yosef provided his father and his brothers and all his father's household with food, according to their little ones.

B'resheet 47:13-19 Now there was no food in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Kena'an languished because of the famine. And Yosef gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Kena'an for the grain which they bought, and Yosef brought the money into Pharaoh's house. And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Kena'an, all the Egyptians came to Yosef and said, "Give us food, for why should we die in your presence? For our money is gone." Then Yosef said, "Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money is gone." So they brought their livestock to Yosef, and Yosef gave them food in exchange for the horses and the flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year. And when that year was ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, "We will not hide from my L-rd that our money is all spent, and the cattle are my L-rd's. There is nothing left for my L-rd except our bodies and our lands. Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate."

This is a picture of the future also. Yeshua is that seed that stops Israel from becoming desolate.

Romans 9:27-29 Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved. For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, because the L-RD will make a short work upon the earth." And as Isaiah said before: "Unless the L-RD of Sabbath had left us a seed, We would have become like Sodom, and we would have been made like Gomorrah."

The corresponding Hebrew letter to this chapter is Gimel - loving kindness; culmination, as in planting a seed and caring for it until it matures.
