B'resheet 4:1 Now the man had relations with his wife Havah (Eve), and she conceived and gave birth to Kayin (Cain), and she said, "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the L-RD."
Kayin - means acquisition. Havah acquired a baby boy. Notice it says with the help of the L-rd. (Adonai)
B'resheet 4:2 And again, she gave birth to his brother Hevel (Abel). And Hevel was a keeper of flocks, but Kayin was a tiller of the ground.
Some believe that Kayin and Hevel were twins. There does not seem to be a gap between the two births.
B'resheet 4:3 So it came about in the course of time that Kayin (Cain) brought an offering to the L-RD of the fruit of the ground.
Fruit of the ground -the fruit is not what is to be desired.
B'resheet 4:4 And Hevel (Abel), on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the L-RD had regard for Hevel (Abel) and for his offering;
Hevel was presenting the "type" of offering (A LAMB) the L-rd wanted presented. He was obedient like Avraham would be when he presented Yitz'chak (Isaac) as a sacrifice. In chapter 22 we will see how G-d intervened and provided a Lamb so that Yitz'chak life was spared.
B'resheet 4:5 but for Kayin (Cain) and for his offering He had no regard. So Kayin (Cain) became very angry and his countenance fell.
Kayin wanted to do things his way and not the way the L-rd wanted him to do. He thought his way was better. Instead of turning from it and doing what the L-rd wanted he became angry.
B'resheet 4:6-7 Then the L-RD said to Kayin (Cain), "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."
Sin is not following the L-rd's instruction. Sin also entered when Kayin started to be jealous of his brother, Hevel and Hevel's relationship with the L-rd and the L-rd's acceptance of him. What was important?
The L-rd's plan was presented for a purpose and planned by His foreknowledge. He had to present the exact type, which had to point to its total fulfillment in the Messiah on the execution stake. This is what pleased the L-rd. The Messiah and the New Covenant would be presented much later. The shadow was presented first, the Messiah second.
He foreknew all those who were predestined to be His. This does not mean we were without choice.
John 2:7 Then Yeshua (Jesus) told the servants to fill them to the brim with water. When this was done he said, "Dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies." When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants did), he called the bridegroom over. "This is wonderful stuff !" he said. "You're different from most. Usually a host uses the best wine first, and afterwards, when everyone is full and doesn't care, then he brings out the less expensive brands. But you have kept the BEST for the LAST!" TLB
Heb 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.
The L-rd saved the better wine for later. Don't be insulted by this. This was the L-rd's plan and the way. Don't be like Kayin and reject the L-rd's way. Don't let jealousy be the cause of eternal separation between you and the L-rd.
sin is crouching at the door - We all face temptation. It is not a sin to be tempted. How you handle temptation is what is important.
James 4:7 Submit therefore to G-d. Resist Ha Satan (the devil) and he will flee from you. NAS
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and G-d is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.
Sibling rivalry got its start with the very first brothers Kayin and Hevel and it still goes on today. Sometimes it does not seem fair when your own brother or sister has it better than you do. Perhaps they have a better job, nicer house, a wonderful spouse, or perfect children. Whatever the case may be it can cause friction and jealousy. I know of a case where a lady, a believer, had been trying for years to have a baby but she was not able to get pregnant. Her younger sister got married and was pregnant with in a few months. Instead of being happy for her sister and accepting her own infertility, she turned her back on G-d and her family. She left her husband and began to drink; smoke, and she had a string of lovers. Now some would say that she had never been a believer in the first place, but that is not true. She simply did not deal with her jealously properly. She was like Kayin.
The fourth letter is Dalet - door; the way. Also represent dimensions and Concern. The Father had concern for mankind and He had to have a plan for those that would eventually follow this plan to its fulfillment.
B'resheet 4:8 And Kayin (Cain) told Hevel (Abel) his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Kayin (Cain) rose up against Hevel (Abel) his brother and killed him.
Rejection of G-d's plan made Kayin angry with his brother. This obviously arose from his jealousy and having no concern for truth or G-d's plan for his brother, he murdered him. Here we see the first martyr murdered by another out of jealousy for following the plan of the L-rd. My how things don't change even today. Yeshua was also killed out of nothing but jealousy by others for telling the truth and following the will of Adonai. Many in the future will be killed out of jealousy of others because they will not know the will of the one true G-d. There are those who claim to know Yeshua who become angry when we say they do not really know Him at all. You can know Him in your head and still not know Him in your heart. To trust Him with your head does you no good ... trusting Him with your heart is what matters. This is the only way. You must be born again. (John 3)
What about those who claim to follow Adonai and really do not follow Adonai because they have rejected the Son and only true Messiah. They will hate you because they feel they are the ones that are close to Adonai but have really gone down the wrong path of pride. Some trust works (mitzvah) or in the shadow for eternal atonement instead of thinking of the shadow as a path to a greater way that reveals to us the will of the Father. That will, of course the revealing of the Son, the Real Deal that does more than temporarily washes us from our uncleanness, but takes it away permanently.
Who was Kayin following?
B'resheet 4:9 Then the L-RD said to Kayin (Cain), "Where is Hevel (Abel) your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
Or we could also say, Should I have concern for my brother?
