B'resheet (Genesis) Chapter 6

We will be quoting from various sources other that the Bible in this lesson. We want to make it clear that we do not accept them on equal footing with the Word of G-d.

B'resheet 6:1-4 Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the "sons of G-d" saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the L-RD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of G-d came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Nephilim - some Bibles translate this word as "giants". It actually should be translated "fallen ones". The normal use for a huge man is "Rapha". Og and Goliath were described by the word rapha (See Deut 3:11; 1 Chron 20:6)

In those days - before the flood

Afterward - After the flood

There are 3 views of what this passage is talking about. We will present the various views and let you decide which makes the most sense.

  1. The "sons of G-d" were kings or judges who did know the ONE TRUE G-D where having relations with the "daughters of men" who were women who did not know the ONE True G-D.
  2. The "Sons of G-d" were descendants of Seth and the "daughters of men" where descendants of Cain. The idea is that the descendants of Seth were "more godly" than the descendants of Cain. I find that hard to believe. There must have been intermingling with the offspring of Cain. It would not mean anything anyway because mankind had already become tainted through the first Adam. This is certainly not a reason to destroy the world with a flood.
  3. The "sons of men" were fallen angels (demons) who mated with earth women "daughters of men".

"Sons of G-d" - ben-elohim" - When "Sons of G-d" is used in other places in scripture it always refers to angels. (See Deut. 32:8;Job 1:6:Job 38:4;Ps. 29; Ps. 89:5)

The 6th Hebrew letter, which corresponds to this chapter, is Vav and stands for man and hook, redemption and transformation.

Were fallen angels having relations with women of the earth?

That would have been some transformation.

One thought is that they, the demons, possessed men whom had relations with women.

An angel can take on human form and is physically able to eat. (See Gen. 18)

Let us look at the Word.

Jude 1:5-15 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the L-rd, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these DREAMERS defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, "The L-rd rebuke you!" But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

The passage indicates that some angels left their abode out of rebellion had gone after strange flesh and are punished for it.

If you think sexual immorality does not hurt anyone then you are wrong. Someone can get hurt, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Sexual promiscuity does not bring happiness.

Some of these "sons of G-d" or fallen angels may have even taught men how to make swords, knifes, shields, bracelets and breastplates from metal. There seemed to be Giants in those days and were known as "the heroes of old and warriors". Were they the offspring of fallen angels and the human race?

This may be were we get many of the mythological stories about people having offspring from gods. If this is true, they were actually offspring of G-d's creation of angels with the women of the earth. They were anything but heroes. They would have been the cause of constant violence and would have also been in constant rebellion against the Most High. Their mission would have been to take over all the women to stop the creation, through any women, of the coming savior. The offspring of mankind then would not be able to bring about the Messiah. If this had continued all human genealogies would have been corrupted. This fact may be one of the reasons that Adonai caused the flood to destroy most of mankind. This may be the reason that Noach was considered "perfect in his generations". (See verse 9) The seed (for the Messiah) would have to come through a woman. So for the demons to try to take all the women from men or to kill all those who were not of the demon offspring would sound like something that could be possible. Is this all speculation?

There seems to be some documentation to support these facts.

Footnote from William Whitson's translation of the respected first century Jewish historian Flavius Josephus' history of the Jewish people:

Now this posterity of Seth continued to esteem G-d as the L-rd of the universe, and to have an entire regard to virtue, for seven generations; but in process of time they were perverted, and forsook the practices of their forefathers, and did neither pay those honors to G-d which were appointed to them, nor had they any concern to do justice towards men. But for what degree of zeal they had formerly shown for virtue, they now showed by their actions a double degree of wickedness; whereby they made G-d to be their enemy, for many angels of G-d accompanied with women and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians called giants. But Noach was very uneasy at what they did; and, being displeased at their conduct, persuaded them to change their dispositions and their acts for the better; but, seeing that they did not yield to him, but were slaves to their wicked pleasures, he was afraid they would kill him, together with his wife and children, and those they had married; so he departed out of that land. (p. 32; bk. 1, ch. 3, 72-74, The Antiquities of the Jews, translated by William Whitson)

The Genesis Apocryphon, one of the texts uncovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls, also contains references to the angels interbreeding with earthly women.

Peter may be mentioning these angels here:

2 Peter 2:4-6 For if G-d did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noach, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; NAS

He was a preacher of righteousness. This tells us he tried his best to tell others about the ONE true G-d and how to follow Him alone. Some it seems wanted to follow after or worshipped the creation or fallen angels whom would have been considered gods or like gods at this time. No matter what kind of idolatry, we should leave it because Adonai is a jealous G-d and does not share His glory with any other so called god or any creation of His.
