John Chapter 13

John 13:1-3 It was just before the Pesach (Passover) Feast. Yeshua (Jesus) knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Yeshua (Jesus). Yeshua (Jesus) knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from G-d and was returning to G-d;

Yeshua was arrested later that night.

We are not of the world yet we are still in the world and have a purpose here and will have a duty here in the future.

John 13:4-5 So He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His talmidim (disciples') feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

Israel is a dry and dusty land. After walking around all day wearing sandals having your feet washed would feel great. However, no one wants to wash someone else’s dirty stinky feet. At this time the job of foot washing was given to the lowliest of servants. The disciples would probably be happy to wash Yeshua’s feet but would not think of washing the feet a fellow disciple. It was unthinkable to wash the feet of a peer let alone the master washing His disciples feet.

John 13:6-8 He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, "L-rd, are you going to wash my feet?" Yeshua (Jesus) replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Yeshua (Jesus) answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me”

Yeshua was giving them a symbolic illustration that He would make them clean by what He would have to do later. Peter was given a choice. He chose to accept what Yeshua had to offer to become complete. It would not make sense to say if Yeshua did not physically wash him he would not be part of what He had to offer. Symbolically this represented what Yeshua had to do and if Peter rejected what Yeshua had to offer later he would have no part and he would remain in sin and be unclean.

John 13:9 "Then, L-rd," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"

G-d supplies all our needs not necessarily everything we want.

It was time for Him to do what the Father commanded. He says as something “they would KNOW later”. Again He knows ahead of time what would happen and when.

John 13:10-11 Yeshua (Jesus) answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." For He knew who was going to betray Him, and that was why He said not every one was clean.

The cleansing that Messiah does to atone for our sins is perfect and complete and never needs to be repeated. But all who have been cleansed by G-d’s gracious justification need constant washing in the sense that they battle sin in the flesh. Believers are justified and granted imputed righteousness

Philippians 3:8-9 Yes doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) my L-rd: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Messiah (Christ), And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Messiah (Christ), the righteousness which is of G-d by faith:

but still need sanctification and personal righteousness

Philippians 3:12-14 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus). Brothers, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth to those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of G-d in Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus).

Yeshua was G-d so He knew Judas’s heart and intentions.

John 13:12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?

Those who serve others now are doing the example that Yeshua showed and will be glorified with Him. His example was Humility and Love. He humbly submitted to the will of the Father. He could have said “NO” but He didn’t.

John 13:13 You call Me Teacher and L-rd; and you are right, for so I AM.

G-d became a man, not man becoming a god.

John 13:14-17 If I then, your L-rd and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example that you should do as I have done to you. Truly, Truly, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.

He instructs them to follow His example and serve their fellow man.

John 13:18 "I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.'

He declared something before it happened. This comes from:

Tehillim (Psalms) 41:9 Yes, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

G-d does this:

Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 48:5-7 I have even from the beginning declared it to you; before it came to pass I showed it you: lest you should say, Mine idol has done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, has commanded them. You have heard, see all this; and will not you declare it? I have showed you new things from this time, even hidden things, and you did not know them. They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when you heard them not; lest you should say, Behold, I knew them.

John 13:19 "From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.

In the Greek the word “He” is NOT at the end of the sentence. The verse should read: you may believe that I AM.

From this time I tell you BEFORE it happens, that when it happens you may believe that “I AM”.

The thirteenth Hebrew letter, corresponding to the thirteenth chapter of John is: “Mem” means “revelation”. Messianic Prophecy and Revelation of whom He is.

John 13:20-21 Truly, Truly, I say to you, He that receives whomever I send receives Me; and he that receives Me receives Him that sent Me. When Yeshua (Jesus) had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Truly, Truly,, I say to you, that one of you shall betray Me.

Was He troubled for Judas and where it would lead him for he loved Judas? Or was He trouble because He would take upon Himself our sin?
