John Chapter 15

Israel was repeatedly referred to as a vine in the Tanakh. Because Israel was unable to remain faithful to G-d she was not able to bear fruit.

Isaiah 5:1-7 Now let me sing to my Well-beloved A song of my Beloved regarding His vineyard: My Well-beloved has a vineyard On a very fruitful hill. He dug it up and cleared out its stones, and planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst, and also made a winepress in it; so He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes. "And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge, please, between me and my vineyard. What more could have been done to my vineyard that I have not done in it? Why then, when I expected it to bring forth good grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes? And now, please let me tell you what I will do to my vineyard :I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned; and break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned or dug, but there shall come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it." For the vineyard of the L-RD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; for righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

Jeremiah 2:21 Yet I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality. How then have you turned before me into the degenerate plant of an alien vine?

Yeshua the “true vine” was able to fulfill what G-d intended for Israel.

Yeshua now discusses 3 important relationships his talmidim are to have.

  1. Their relationship to Yeshua (verses 1 -10)

John 15:1-10: “I AM” the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that bears not fruit he takes away: and every branch that bears fruit, he purges it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean through the word, which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine;(divine support) no more can you, except you abide in me. “I AM” the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done to you. Herein is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; so shall you be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you: continue you in my love. If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in His love.

Here again we have Yeshua referring to Himself, as I AM, another declaration that He is G-d.

The 15th Hebrew letter is “Samech”. We have the meaning of divine presence and support; stands fro Holy of Holies of the Temple.

The branches that are taken away are those who claim to be followers of Yeshua but in reality are not. They have not truly placed their faith and trust in Him. Judas Iscariot is an example of this; he followed Yeshua for 3 years but never really trusted in Him as Messiah and L-rd.

Those that are true believers have changed and you will see it in their lives. The L-rd prunes us, just like a vine branch. He removes things from our lives that hinder our ability to produce fruit. He is also our source of our strength, love, peace, and support. He lives us and fills us like He did the Holy of Holies in the Temple, yet our bodies are now like this temple. We live for Him and He lives through us. We are dead to self and alive to Him.

Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Instructions)

As true believers in Yeshua we are to abide in Him. How does one do this? By spending time each day in prayer (talking with G-d) and studying scripture or Bible study (listening to G-d speak to us.)

Those who are not believers will face destruction in the “Lake of Fire” someday.

Also listening to His calling or leading when He wants us to reach others or be of service to them.

1 John 4:7-10 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of G-d; and every one that loves is born of G-d, and knows G-d. He that loves not knows not G-d; for G-d is LOVE. In this was manifested the love of G-d toward us, because that G-d sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved G-d, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation (satisfaction) for our sins.

If we go back to the account in:

Genesis 22:9 And they came to the place which G-d had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

G-d asks Avraham to offer his son Isaac (Yitz’chak). Isn’t this a clue? Wasn’t this thought on His mind?

He was pleased with the trust of Avraham and his willingness to offer Isaac (Yitz’chak). Sarah laughed, yet it was a laugh of wonder and amazement. Could Sarah actually have a son at her age?

Isaac was promised. (v17) In like manner, Our Yeshua HaMashiach is a covenant of promise.

Could G-d have a Son of promise too?

Abide in His Word.

  1. Their relationship to each other (verses 11-17)

John 15:11-17: These things have I spoken to you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full (complete) This is my commandment, That you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knows not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known to you. You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, He may give it you. These things I command you, that you love one another.

Here we learn that true joy comes from staying close to Yeshua. Remaining faithful to Him.
