The Seventeenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Peh - meaning mouth.
The entire chapter is Yeshua’s prayer before His death.
This prayer can be broken down into 7 petitions.
Petition 1: That Yeshua may be glorified as the Son who has glorified the father.
John 17:1 “Yeshua spoke these things…”
In verses 1 - 5 Yeshua prayed for Himself.
John 17:1 “… and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify your Son, that your Son also may glorify you:”
Tehillim (Psalms 2:12) Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their refuge in Him.
John 17:2 As you have given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know You the only true G-d, and Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus Christ), whom you have sent.
John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth: I have finished the work which You gave Me to do.
He finished the work He had to do as Yeshua Ben Adam (Humanity described in Luke) and since He was cut off will have to return one day as Yeshua Ben David in His glory.
Petition 2: For restoration to the eternal glory.
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me with Your own self with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
His glory had been hidden. He preferred to suffer like Moshe preferred to suffer instead of the blessings from above.
In verses 6-19 He prayed for His talmidim.
John 17:6 I have manifested Your Name to the men, which You gave Me out of the world: Yours they were, and You gave them Me; and they have kept Your word.
The Father leads us to the son and to keep the words He spoke.
John 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever You have given Me is from You.
John 17:8 For I have given to them the words which You gave Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from You, and they have believed that that You sent Me.
Deut 18:18-19 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their kinsmen, like you, and will put My words in His mouth; and He shall speak to them all that I shall command (Tsavah also used in ref. of a father to a son in 1Sam 17:20) Him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken to my words which He shall speak in My name, I will require it of Him.
John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them, which You have given Me; for they are Yours.
John 17:10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I am glorified in them.
The Father gave the Son authority over us. What belongs to the Son belongs to the Father. Yeshua gets all the glory for what He does through us.
Petition 3 For the safety of the believers from the world (v11) and the evil one (v15)
John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your own name those whom You has given Me, that they may be one, as We are.
One in compound unity.
He speaks as if He is already out of the world before it happens. The prophets also spoke what G-d would do before it happened and received it from the Father.
John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name: those that You gave me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
The Son of Perdition is a reference to Y’hudah Ben-Shim’on from K’riot (Judas Iscariot).
Y’hudah was possessed by HaSatan himself. HaSatan will possess the Anti-Messiah in the future, during the tribulation period (aka. The time of Jacobs trouble)
2 Thess 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
John 17:13 And now come I to You; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves.
The Messiah fills our emptiness with joy, peace, love, and longsuffering.
John 17:14 I have given them your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
He is not of the world but from above. Just like Him we will not be liked for not being like the world.
John 17:15 I pray not that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.
We are not to withdrawal or hide. We should have a transformed life and be a light for others to see.
He has asked us to tell the Basar (good news) in the world.
