John 5:1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Yeshua (Jesus) went up to Jerusalem.
This is the only time that John did not specify which Jewish feast was occurring.
John 5:2-8 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick folk, of blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Yeshua (Jesus) saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, He said to him, Do you wish to get well? The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steps down before me. Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, Rise, take up your bed, and walk.
Yeshua told him to take up his bed and walk.
John 5:9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the Sabbath.
“Immediately” he was completely healed. This man had not walked in 38 years; his muscles would have long since atrophied from lack of use. Not only could he stand and walk, he was immediately strong enough to carry his bed.
John 5:10 The Jews therefore said to him that was cured, it is the Sabbath day: it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.
Transporting an object in public domain was not permitted on the Sabbath according to oral tradition. (Mishnah Shabbat 7:2;10:5)
What was more important? The proof of the healing and all would see the glory of G-d and believe.
I mean after thirty-eight years of an infirmity G-d restored him. Praise G-d!!!
Notice Yeshua does not pray or ask, He commanded - “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
John 5:11-12 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said to me, Take up your bed, and walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said to you, Take up your bed, and walk?
Instead of praising G-d for this healing and finding spiritual significance for this act of mercy they hardened their hearts to the act and to Him.
John 5:13-14 And he that was healed did not who it was: for Yeshua (Jesus) had slipped while there was a crowd in that place, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Yeshua (Jesus) found him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse may befall you.
Yeshua tells the man to sin no more. Was sin the cause of his illness? Perhaps. Sin is not always the cause of an illness.
John 5:15-16 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Yeshua (Jesus), which had made him whole. And therefore did the Jews persecute Yeshua (Jesus), and sought to slay Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath day.
They wanted to slay him for healing on the Sabbath. Healing is an extension of life.
They wanted to find fault where there was none.
John 5:17 But Yeshua (Jesus) answered them, My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.
Yeshua says He has been working. He was working to bring in the new creation. Can one become a new creation on the Sabbath? What’s more important?
He was L-rd of the Sabbath. (Matt. 12:8) Does the L-rd hold the universe together on the Sabbath?
John 5:18 For this cause therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling G-d His own Father, making Himself equal with G-d.
Here we see another claim to Yeshua’s deity. There are those that believe that Yeshua never claimed to be G-d. A careful examination of this passage shows us that the Jewish people understood that He was claiming to be G-d.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ (Anointed), he is a NEW CREATION; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from G-d, who reconciled us to himself through Christ (Anointed) and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that G-d was reconciling the world to himself in Christ (Anointed), not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's (Messiah’s emissaries) ambassadors, as though G-d were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's (Messiah’s) behalf: Be reconciled to G-d. G-d made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of G-d.
The Father and Son continue to create and sustain creation from the beginning. He claims to be the Son of the Father. (Abba)
John 5:19 Yeshua (Jesus) therefore answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
He claims equality with the Father. They are one.
