Yonah (Jonah) Chapter 4

Yonah 4:1 But it displeased Yonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

There are those that are angry that G-d shows mercy to others or Adonai shows mercy to others through His Son. They may even say, Stop loving us so much. Is it just for you to be angry?

Yonah 4:2 And he prayed Adonai and said, "Please Adonai, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore, in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate G-d, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness, and one who relents concerning calamity.

Yonah really did not want Adonai to show mercy to these pagans. You would think that after 3 days an nights in the belly of the fish he would be humble and would have lost his bad attitude.

Yonah 4:3 Therefore now, O Adonai, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

He is really acting like a child who didnít get his own way.

Yonah 4:4 Then said Adonai, Is it right for you to be angry?

The fourth letter is Delet- door; the way and also involves concern for your fellow man and Dimensions.

Yonah did not like what He saw. You have to remember these people where known to be cruel to the Israelites. His forgiveness and compassion was a little slow which is understandable to a point. We should pray for our adversaries and hope that they come to repentance and come to knowing Yeshua as their Messiah.

Mark 11:25-26And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your transgressions. ["But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions."] NAS

Yonah 4:5 So Yonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, until he might see what would become of the city.

What was Yonah waiting to see happen? Calamity

Sometimes we see the wicked in their wickedness and we wonder where the justice of Adonai is. We wait for His judgment to come.

2 Peter 3:8-13 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The L-rd is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the L-rd will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of G-d, on account of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His Promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. NAS

Adonai wanted Yonah to understand his concern for his fellow man.

Yonah 4:6 And Adonai G-d prepared a castor-bean plant, and made it to come up over Yonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Yonah was exceeding glad of the castor-bean plant.

Castor-bean plant - The identity of this plant is uncertain but could be the castor oil plant, which in hot climates grows rapidly to give shade with its large leaves.

Yonah 4:7 But Adonai, G-d prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the castor-bean plant that it withered.
