Y'hoshua (Joshua) Chapter 10

The corresponding letter to this chapter is Yod – a metaphysical and Divine letter meaning hand – the right hand of G-d.

Y’hoshua 10:1-5 Now it came about when Adoni-Tzedek king of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) heard that Y’hoshua had captured Ai, and had utterly destroyed it (just as he had done to Yericho (Jericho) and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king), and that the inhabitants of Giv’on (Gibeon) had made peace with Israel and were within their land, that he feared greatly, because Giv’on (Gibeon) was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Yerushalayim sent word to Hoham king of Hevron (Hebron) and to Pir,am king of Yarmut (Jarmuth) and to Yafia (Japhia) king of Lakhish (Lachish) and to D’vir (Debir) king of Eglon, saying, "Come up to me and help me, and let us attack Giv’on (Gibeon), for it has made peace with Y’hoshua and with the sons of Israel." So the five kings of the Emori (Amorites), the king of Yerushalayim, the king of Hevron, the king of Yarmut (Jarmuth), the king of Lakhish (Lachish), and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they with all their armies, and camped by Giv’on (Gibeon) and fought against it.

They plan to take out Israel’s newest ally first, the next step would have been an attack on Israel herself.

Y’hoshua 10:6-11 Then the men of Giv’on (Gibeon) sent word to Y’hoshua to the camp at Gilgal, saying, "Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Emori (Amorites) that live in the hill country have assembled against us." So Y’hoshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him and all the valiant warriors. And the L-RD said to Y’hoshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; not one of them shall stand before you." So Y’hoshua came upon them suddenly by marching all night from Gilgal. And the L-RD confounded them before Israel, and He slew them with a great slaughter at Giv’on (Gibeon), and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beit-horon, and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. And it came about as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beit-horon, that the L-RD threw large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

More who died from the hailstones – These must have been HUGE hailstones to kill the enemy soldiers.

The L-rd confounded them and slew them. This is a reference to the Captain of the army of the L-rd or the angel of the L-rd or Yeshua, take your pick what you will call him. He will also go against the nations in the future and the blood will flow up to the horse’s bridle.

Revelation 14:14-16 And I looked, and a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man, having a golden crown on His head, and a sharp sickle in His hand. And another angel came out of the temple, crying out with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, "Put in your sickle and reap, because the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe." And He who sat on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth; and the earth was reaped.

He will also use hailstones at this time also.

Revelation 16:19-17:1 And the great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And Babylon the great was remembered before G-d, to give her the cup of the wine of His fierce wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men; and men blasphemed G-d because of the plague of the hail, because its plague was extremely severe.

Y’hoshua 10:12-13a Then Y’hoshua spoke to the L-RD in the day when the L-RD delivered up the Emori (Amorites) before the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "O sun, stand still at Giv’on (Gibeon), And O moon in the valley of Ayalon (Aijalon)." So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies.

Notice Y’hoshua is asking the L-rd to help him and not commanding the sun himself. This is important. Y’hoshua was a type of Yeshua HaMashiach but there is still a big difference between him and Yeshua who had the authority to command nature.

Mark 4:39-41 And being aroused, He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, "Why are you so timid? How is it that you have no faith?" And they became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

He had the authority because of His divine nature. He still did not do it out of his own initiative and could not do it without the Father.

Yochanan (John) 5:30 "I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Yochanan (John) 5:19 Yeshua replied, "The Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing, and in the same way.

The one true G-d creator of the sun, moon, and the earth caused a miracle to happen that lengthen the day so that Israel would have a victory. The ancient Egyptians, Hindus, and Chinese all note an extra long day taking place! Yeshua, who is divine, stopped the wind. What a G-d we serve. It is nice to know that He has all these things under His control and power. WE give glory to the Father. WE also give glory to the Son.

Yochanan (John) 5:20-23 For the Father loves the Son, and tells him everything he is doing; and the Son will do far more awesome miracles than this man's healing. He will even raise from the dead anyone he wants to, just as the Father does.

And the Father leaves all judgment of sin to his Son, so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. But if you refuse to honor G-d's Son, whom he sent to you, then you are certainly not honoring the Father.

He rose from the dead on the command of the Father. He would not remain in a cave covered by a stone like these kings. He rose and will return again as King of Kings.

Yochanan (John) 10:18"No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father."

The kings who will be hidden in a cave forever below:

Y’hoshua 10:13b-15 Is it not written in the book of Yashar (Jashar)? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, when the L-RD listened to the voice of a man; for the L-RD fought for Israel. Then Y’hoshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp to Gilgal.

No day like that before it or after it – This is an indication that it was a unique event in history and not something that could be easily explained away. This is a miracle.

Y’hoshua 10:16-24 Now these five kings had fled and hidden themselves in the cave at Makkedah. And it was told Y’hoshua, saying, "The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah." And Y’hoshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and assign men by it to guard them, but do not stay there yourselves; pursue your enemies and attack them in the rear. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the L-RD your G-d has delivered them into your hand. " And it came about when Y’hoshua and the sons of Israel had finished slaying them with a very great slaughter, until they were destroyed, and the survivors who remained of them had entered the fortified cities, that all the people returned to the camp to Y’hoshua at Makkedah in peace. No one uttered a word against any of the sons of Israel. Then Y’hoshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring these five kings out to me from the cave." And they did so, and brought these five kings out to him from the cave: the king of Yerushalayim, the king of Hevron, the king of Yarmut, the king of Lakhish, and the king of Eglon. And it came about when they brought these kings out to Y’hoshua, that Y’hoshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." So they came near and put their feet on their necks.

Wow! The L-rd made their enemies a footstool for the feet of Israel. To whom does the Father say this same thing too?

Y’hoshua 10:25 Y’hoshua then said to them, "Do not fear or be dismayed! Be strong and courageous, for thus the L-RD will do to all your enemies with whom you fight."

A promise to Israel, a type of Messiah, that their enemies would become a footstool. A foreshadowing of “The promise” from the Father to His only unique Son – Yeshua HaMashiach that He would make His enemies also a footstool for His pierced feet.

Y’hoshua 10:26-27 So afterward Y’hoshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees; and they hung on the trees until evening. And it came about at sunset that Y’hoshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and put large stones over the mouth of the cave, to this very day.

Don’t tell me you don’t know what this all is pointing to?

Yeshua was hung on an execution stake and put in a cave that was sealed by rock. These men would never rise again but Yeshua rose again. The father would also make His enemies a footstool for His feet. We know that the angel of the L-rd was and is Yeshua but we know Him as much more than that. He will conquer the kings of the nations and also the eleventh king that arises known as the anti-Messiah mentioned in Daniel. Yeshua is no ordinary angel.

For example:

Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, "Sit at My “RIGHT HAND”, Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"?

Tehillim (Psalms) 110:1-7 The L-RD says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." The L-RD will stretch forth Thy strong scepter from Zion, saying, "Rule in the midst of your enemies." our people will volunteer freely in the day of your power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, your youth are to you as the dew. The L-RD has sworn and will not change His mind; "You art a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek." The Lord is at your “RIGHT HAND”; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath. ,He will judge among the nations, He will fill them with corpses, He will shatter the chief men over a broad country. He will drink from the brook by the wayside; Therefore He will lift up His head.

Hebrews 10:11-13 And every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the RIGHT HAND of G-d, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.

Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed for the L-rd will destroy all our enemies in the future. Comforting words to those that believe in the name of His son too.

Y’hoshua 10:28-30 Now Y’hoshua captured Makkedah on that day, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed it and every person who was in it. He left no survivor. Thus he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Yericho. Then Y’hoshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Livnah, and fought against Livnah. And the L-RD gave it also with its king into the hands of Israel, and he struck it and every person who was in it with the edge of the sword. He left no survivor in it. Thus he did to its king just as he had done to the king of Yericho.

The L-rd gave it into Y’hoshua’s and Israel’s hands.

Y’hoshua 10:31-43 And Y’hoshua and all Israel with him passed on from Livnah to Lakhish, and they camped by it and fought against it. And the L-RD gave Lakhish into the hands of Israel; and he captured it on the second day, and struck it and every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, according to all that he had done to Livnah. Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lakhish, and Y’hoshua defeated him and his people until he had left him no survivor. And Y’hoshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lakhish to Eglon, and they camped by it and fought against it. And they captured it on that day and struck it with the edge of the sword; and he utterly destroyed that day every person who was in it, according to all that he had done to Lachish. Then Y’hoshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hevron, and they fought against it. And they captured it and struck it and its king and all its cities and all the persons who were in it with the edge of the sword. He left no survivor, according to all that he had done to Eglon. And he utterly destroyed it and every person who was in it. Then Y’hoshua and all Israel with him returned to Debir, and they fought against it. And he captured it and its king and all its cities, and they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person who was in it. He left no survivor. Just as he had done to Hebron, so he did to D’vir and its king, as he had also done to Livnah and its king. Thus Y’hoshua struck all the land, the hill country and the Negev and the lowland and the slopes and all their kings. He left no survivor, but he utterly destroyed all who breathed, just as the L-RD, the G-d of Israel, had commanded. And Y’hoshua struck them from Kadesh-Barnea even as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen even as far as Giv’on. And Y’hoshua captured all these kings and their lands at one time, because the L-RD, the G-d of Israel, fought for Israel. So Y’hoshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.

Why did they conquer? Not because of who Israel was but because of who the G-d of Israel was, because the G-d of Israel fought for Israel. He will fight for them again in the future.

Revelation 19:15-21 And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may smite the nations; and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of G-d, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND L-RD OF LORDS." And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, "Come, assemble for the great supper of G-d; in order that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great. " And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who sat upon the horse, and against His army. And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat upon the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.
