Y'hoshua (Joshua) Chapter 2

The corresponding letter to this chapter is Beit- house; duality as in husband and wife; also division between good and evil, etc.

Y’hoshua 2:1-2 Then Y’hoshua the son of Nun sent two men as spies secretly from Shittim, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Yericho (Jericho)." So they went and came into the HOUSE of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lodged there. And it was told the king of Yericho (Jericho), saying, "Look, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land."

In view of the meaning of the chapter whose house do we come upon?

A house of a harlot named Rachav (Rahab). Sometimes HaShem blesses us regardless of the life we live and shows mercy beyond our stupidity. Also remember the Mosaic Law was given to Israel and only Israel had sworn to abide by it.

Tehillim (Psalm) 103:8-14 The L-RD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in loving-kindness. He will not always strive with us; nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His loving kindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the L-RD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.

Rachav feared the L-rd and will faithfully act on it.

The fear the L-rd is the beginning of wisdom.

Mishlei (Proverbs) 9:10-12 The fear of the L-RD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

Y’hoshua 2:3-7 And the king of Yericho sent word to Rachav (Rahab), saying, "Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land." But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And it came about when it was time to shut the gate, at dark, that the men went out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them." But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof. So the men pursued them on the road to the Yarden (Jordan) to the fords; and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.

These stalks of flax were put out to dry in the sun. We also see them mentioned in Isaiah.

Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 42:3 "A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;

These flax reeds may symbolize Rachav herself who may be like a reed fragile and oppressed by sin yet her light to others was not extinguished.

Y’hoshua 2:8-14 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, and said to the men, "I know that the L-RD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you. For we have heard how the L-RD dried up the water of the Sea of Suf (Red Sea) before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Yarden (Jordan), to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And when we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the L-RD your G-d, He is G-d in heaven above and on earth beneath. Now therefore, please swear to me by the L-RD, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father's household, and give me a pledge of truth, and spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, with all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death. " So the men said to her, "Our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the L-RD gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you."

Rachav shows true faith that the G-d of Israel is the G-d who made the heaven and the earth. She and her family are rewarded for helping them and having faith in the mercy of the L-rd.

Y’hoshua 2:15-21 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall, so that she was living on the wall. And she said to them, "Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers happen upon you, and hide yourselves there for three days, until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way." And the men said to her, "We shall be free from this oath to you which you have made us swear, unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father's household. And it shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be free; but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if a hand is laid on him. But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be free from the oath which you have made us swear." And she said, "According to your words, so be it." So she sent them away, and they departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

They are offered protection from death by a scarlet thread if they act on this faith. This is a type of Passover for a Gentile. G-d used Israel as an instrument of His divine judgment against Yericho. This also points us to spiritual salvation, the good news, which is available to all. It requires us to act and do what the Father asks us to do and that is tell the Father with our mouths that we trust that His Son Yeshua came to save us eternally from our sins so we would one day cross-over to the paradise above. Will you act on this news or won’t you ?

Yochanan (John) 4:16-26 He said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Yeshua said to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly. " The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. "Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) is the place where men ought to worship." Yeshua said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Yerushalayim, shall you worship the Father. "You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for SALVATION COMES FROM THE JEWS. "BUT an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. "G-d is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming; when that One comes, He will declare all things to us." Yeshua said to her, "I who speak to you am He."

Many hearts were hardened against Yeshua as they were in the wilderness against Moshe. The Gentiles who heard the good news then acted upon the good news through faith were grafted in.

Yeshua came so all could have life and have it abundantly. The battle was His for He did it all for us on the execution stake. We only have to confess with our mouth we are sinners and believe.

Yochanan (John) 10:7-18 Yeshua said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. "All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. "The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have LIFE, and might HAVE IT ABUNDANTLY. "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. "He who is a hireling, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, beholds the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep, and flees, and the wolf snatches them, and scatters them. "He flees because he is a hireling, and is not concerned about the sheep. "I am the good shepherd; and I know My own, and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. "And I have OTHER SHEEP, which are NOT OF THIS FOLD; I MUST BRING THEM ALSO, and they shall hear My voice; and they shall become one flock with one shepherd. "For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. "No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father."

Faith, along with acting upon this faith, such as when Rachav hid these men brought physical salvation to her and her family. This can also be seen in the life of another Gentile that helped physically save her family too. She acted upon her faith and went to Yeshua.

Mattityahu (Matthew) 15:21-28 And Yeshua went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon. And look, a Canaanite woman came out from that region, and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, O L-rd, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed." But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came to Him and kept asking Him, saying, "Send her away, for she is shouting out after us." But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, "L-rd, help me!" And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." But she said, "Yes, L-rd; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table." Then Yeshua answered and said to her, "O woman, your faith is great; be it done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at once.

Y’hoshua 2:22-24 And they departed and came to the hill country, and remained there for three days until the pursuers returned. Now the pursuers had sought them all along the road, but had not found them. Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country and crossed over and came to Y’hoshua the son of Nun, and they related to him all that had happened to them. And they said to Y’hoshua, "Surely the L-RD has given all the land into our hands, and all the inhabitants of the land, moreover, have melted away before us."

When the L-rd is on your side it does not matter the numbers you still are in the majority even though He is ONE!
