Y'hoshua (Joshua) Chapter 3

The corresponding letter to this chapter is Gimel – lovingkindness; culmination, as in planting a seed and caring for it until it matures.

Y’hoshua 3:1-3 Then Y’hoshua rose early in the morning; and he and all the sons of Israel set out from Shittim and came to the Yarden (Jordan), and they lodged there before they crossed. And it came about at the end of three days that the officers went through the midst of the camp; and they commanded the people, saying, "When you see the ark of the covenant of the L-RD your G-d with the Levitical priests carrying it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.

The Levitical priests did not normally carry the Ark. It was the job of the cohen.

You have faith and then you have action on the faith. They followed the Word and His Spirit.

Galatians 5:16-17 I advise you to obey only Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit)'s instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do, and then you won't always be doing the wrong things your evil nature wants you to. For we naturally love to do evil things that are just the opposite from the things that Ruach HaKodesh tells us to do; and the good things we want to do when the Ruach (Spirit) has his way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures.

And not the flesh:

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of G-d.

Those in Yeshua HaMashiach should have nailed their natural desires to the execution stake and left them there. We have become dead to sin and alive to Yeshua. Like they did here we follow Him.

Galatians 5:24 Those who belong to Messiah have nailed their natural evil desires to his execution stake and crucified them there.

We left all the idols behind in the wilderness. The wilderness brought death. Now the nation was reborn and rose and carried on in faith and acted on it by following the type of Messiah Y’hoshua. Remember Israel too is a type of Yeshua HaMashiach. We too then must also follow the real deal to become dead to sin and alive to Messiah and follow Him in newness of life. The choice is yours. Will you or will you not follow him? The battle was His for He did it all for us we only have to believe.

Romans 6:4-11 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Messiah was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Messiah, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Messiah, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin, once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to G-d. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to G-d in Yeshua HaMashiach.

Romans 8:12-17 So then, brothers, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of G-d, these are sons of G-d. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of G-d, and if children, heirs also, heirs of G-d and fellow heirs with Messiah, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

Walking in the Spirit is walking with Him and learning more about Him. It can be more than the fruit of the spirit although that is what it involves also. It means wanting to spend more time studying “all” of his word including the B’rit Hadashah. It is learning more about His Son and learning about what the Father wanted the Son to tell us. It is acting upon what he told us. It means loving others and those outside our own nationalities and ethnic groups. It means having to die to the old self and the old nature. It means dying to certain old beliefs that were from man and not from above or from His word. It may mean not following others to death or the life of the flesh, which leads to death. We are called out of the old life and into the new life and to whatever that will entail. It may mean leaving friends who do not want to let go of the flesh or old ideas that keep us from the true Messiah Yeshua. We do know he will not ask us to do anything that he will not give us a way or the provisions to do it with. He provides us with a Spirit to become conquers of the flesh through Him. .

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;

Y’hoshua 3:4 However, there shall be between you and it a distance of about 2,000 cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you shall go, for you have not passed this way before."

2,000 cubits - A cubit is about 18 inches so this would be about 1,000 yards.

Y’hoshua 3:5-6 Then Y’hoshua said to the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the L-RD will do wonders among you." And Y’hoshua spoke to the priests, saying, "Take up the Ark of the Covenant and cross over ahead of the people." So they took up the Ark of the Covenant and went ahead of the people.

Consecrate – From the Hebrew word “Kodesh” meaning holy, pure. This is where the word “Kosher” comes from.

Y’hoshua 3:7 Now the L-RD said to Y’hoshua, "This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that just as I have been with Moshe, I will be with you.

The L-rd was with Y’hoshua and would also part the Yarden not unlike when the L-rd parted the Red Sea earlier on their journey. The Ark of the Covenant went ahead of them just like the Shekinah glory did in the wilderness out of Egypt.

Y’hoshua 3:8-13 "You shall, moreover, command the priests who are carrying the Ark of the Covenant, saying, 'When you come to the edge of the waters of the Yarden, you shall stand still in the Yarden.'" Then Y’hoshua said to the sons of Israel, "Come here, and hear the words of the L-RD your G-d." And Y’hoshua said, "By this you shall know that the living G-d is among you, and that He will assuredly dispossess from before you the Kena’ani (Canaanite), the Hitti (Hittite), the Hivi (Hivite), the P’rizi (Perizzite), the Girgashi (Girgashite), the Emori (Amorite), and the Y’vusi (Jebusite). Look, the ark of the covenant of the L-rd of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Yarden. Now then, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe. And it shall come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the L-RD, the L-rd of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Yarden, the waters of the Yarden shall be cut off, and the waters which are flowing down from above shall stand in one heap."

We have already told you whom the Ark of the Covenant represents. The gold represents Yeshua’s deity and the wood his humanity. The poles represent the execution stake through his hands and feet. This represents Yeshua going before them and fighting their battle for them. The battle belongs to the L-rd and He will destroy Israel’s enemies. It still required action on the part of Israel. They responded to his leading and they took a step of faith that the waters would be cut off. Here the priest’s feet touch the waters of the Yarden and the waters separate. In the future, Yeshua our High Priest’s feet will stand on the Mount of Olives and the Mount will split in its middle and there will be two mountains. One will move toward the north and the other toward the south. Yeshua will battle the nations that gathered against Israel. The battle will again belong to Him. Israel will then flee by the valley, which will reach to Atzel. Waters will flow out of Yerushalayim, half toward the eastern sea (Dead Sea) the other half toward the western sea. (Mediterranean Sea) It will also not dry up in the summer.

Zechariah 14:1-8 Look, a day is coming for the L-RD when the spoil taken from you will be divided among you. For I will gather all the nations against Yerushalayim to battle, and the city will be captured, the houses plundered, the women ravished, and half of the city exiled, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city. Then the L-RD will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Yerushalayim on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south. And you will flee by the valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azel; yes, you will flee just as you fled before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Y’hudah. Then the L-RD, my G-d, will come, and all the holy ones with Him! And it will come about in that day that there will be no light; the luminaries will dwindle. For it will be a unique day which is known to the L-RD, neither day nor night, but it will come about that at evening time there will be light. And it will come about in that day that living waters will flow out of Yerushalayim, half of them toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea; it will be in summer as well as in winter.

Mishlei (Proverbs) 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know!

His name is Yeshua. (The L-rd is our salvation!)

Y’hoshua 3:14-17 So it came about when the people set out from their tents to cross the Yarden with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant before the people, and when those who carried the ark came into the Yarden, and the feet of the priests carrying the ark were dipped in the edge of the water (for the Yarden overflows all its banks all the days of harvest), that the waters which were flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho. And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the L-RD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Yarden while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Yarden.

G-d provided safe passage for his children across the Yarden River. NO ONE had to swim to the Promised Land…no one waded through mud. It was the same in Noah’s day; they were all safe in the ark BEFORE it started to rain. Some believe that believers in Yeshua will have to go though part of the Tribulation period, AKA Israel’s Seventh Week. This is not the case. G-d will lead His children to safety first, before he brings judgment upon the wicked.
