Y'hoshua (Joshua) Chapter 6

The corresponding letter to this chapter is Vav – hook; redemption and transformation. Stands for man created on the sixth day, etc.

Y’hoshua 6:1-5 Now Yericho (Jericho) was tightly shut because of the sons of Israel; no one went out and no one came in. And the L-RD said to Y’hoshua, "See, I have given Yericho into your hand, with its king and the valiant warriors. And you shall march around the city, all the men of war circling the city once. You shall do so for six days. Also seven priests shall carry seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark; then on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And it shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up every man straight ahead."

Now tell me if the L-rd told you this would you believe Him or think it was kind of silly? It requires trusting in His word, does it not?

Some try to say that this never occurred and that the current dates of when Jericho was a city do not correspond to the dates of when this happened in the Tanakh. So they try to say this causes an enigma. This is no problem when you realize there have been different cities or towns called Jericho and one was actually built on top of another so this is why you could have different dates. According to the Word everything was destroyed. So I do not think there would be anything left to date. It would also be hard to be sure if a brick belonged to this city of Jericho. When I went to Jericho they actually had some walls there made out of the clay of the earth. These are different walls but just looking at these walls made out of clay I could see how it would not have taken much for these walls to come down. It only restored my faith in what the word said happened back then. How did it happen? I don’t know. There are many things we do not see in the spiritual realm. It may have been angels that knocked the walls down or it may have been the power of G-d. We must also remember that man only finds certain things of G-d as foolishness.

1 Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of G-d; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

Y’hoshua 6:6-11 So Y’hoshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the L-RD." Then he said to the people, "Go forward, and march around the city, and let the armed men go on before the ark of the L-RD." And it was so, that when Y’hoshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the L-RD went forward and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of the L-RD followed them. And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, while they continued to blow the trumpets. But Y’hoshua commanded the people, saying, "You shall not shout nor let your voice be heard, nor let a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you, 'Shout!' Then you shall shout!" So he had the ark of the L-RD taken around the city, circling it once; then they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.

This is also a foreshadowing of what will happen during the time of Ya’akov’s trouble. In the future the angels will also blow trumpets –interestingly seven trumpet blasts inside a seven-year period instead of a seven-day period.

Revelation 8:6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

Y’hoshua 6:12-13 Now Y’hoshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the L-RD. And the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the L-RD went on continually, and blew the trumpets; and the armed men went before them, and the rear guard came after the ark of the L-RD, while they continued to blow the trumpets. Thus the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp; they did so for six days.

Think about what it must have been like for the people who lived in Yericho. Each day they must have expected the Israelites to attack. I think it would have been nerve racking, waiting and wondering when the attack would come.

The ark - Remember Y’hoshua is a type of Yeshua HaMashiach. The ark is present here in Yericho, and it will be present in Heaven during Yeshua’s reign.

Y’hoshua 6:15-16 Then it came about on the seventh day that they rose early at the dawning of the day and marched around the city in the same manner seven times; only on that day they marched around the city seven times. And it came about at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Y’hoshua said to the people, "Shout! For the L-RD has given you the city.

There will also be a great shout in the future to begin the Messiah’s reign. Below is what they will shout in the future after the seventh trumpet sounds during Ya’akov’s trouble:

Revelation 11:15-17 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our L-rd and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever." And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before G-d, fell on their faces and worshiped G-d, saying: "We give thanks to you, L-rd G-d Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign. The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great- and for destroying those who destroy the earth." Then G-d's temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a great hailstorm.

Y’hoshua 6:17-21 And the city shall be under the ban, it and all that is in it belongs to the L-RD; only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in the house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things under the ban, lest you covet them and take some of the things under the ban, so you would make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it. But all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to the L-RD; they shall go into the treasury of the L-RD." So the people shouted, and priests blew the trumpets; and it came about, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight ahead, and they took the city. And they utterly destroyed everything in the city, man and woman, young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

In the future many will be killed by the sword and the great city of Babylon will be laid waste. We are to rejoice!

Revelation 18:19-21 Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea became rich by her wealth, for in one hour she has been laid waste!' "Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, because G-d has pronounced judgment for you against her." And a strong angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, "Thus will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down with violence, and will not be found any longer.

Y’hoshua 6:22-25 And Y’hoshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the harlot's house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her." So the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also brought out all her relatives, and placed them outside the camp of Israel. And they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the L-RD. However, Rahab the harlot and her father's household and all she had, Y’hoshua spared; and she has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, for she hid the messengers whom Y’hoshua sent to spy out Jericho.

Y’hoshua ordered that Rahab be spared from the destruction of the city, because of the kindness she showed the spies. Before Yeshua brings His wrath in the future, He will rescue His bride, the believers in Yeshua.

Y’hoshua 6:26-27 Then Y’hoshua made them take an oath at that time, saying, "Cursed before the L-RD is the man who rises up and builds this city Jericho; with the loss of his first-born he shall lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he shall set up its gates." So the L-RD was with Y’hoshua, and his fame was in all the land.

Y’hoshua did not think the city should be built upon or that it should rise again. In the future the L-rd would say the same thing about the city of Babylon.

Revelation 18:21-24 And a strong angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, "Thus will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down with violence, and will not be found any longer. "And the sound of harpists and musicians and flute-players and trumpeters will not be heard in you any longer; and no craftsman of any craft will be found in you any longer; and the sound of a mill will not be heard in you any longer; and the light of a lamp will not shine in you any longer; and the voice of the bridegroom and bride will not be heard in you any longer; for your merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery. "And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all who have been slain on the earth." NAS

The area around Yericho was later occupied but Hiel rebuilt Yericho and experienced the curse by losing his eldest and youngest sons.

1 Kings 16:34 In his days Hiel the Bethelite built Yericho; he laid its foundations with the loss of Abiram his first-born, and set up its gates with the loss of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the L-RD, which He spoke by Y’hoshua the son of Nun.
