Shof'tim (Judges) Chapter 17

The corresponding letter to this chapter is Peh-mouth

Shof’tim 17:1-6 Now there was a man of the hill country of Efrayim whose name was Mikhah. And he said to his mother, "The eleven hundred pieces of silver which were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse in my hearing, look, the silver is with me; I took it." And his mother said, "Blessed be my son by the L-RD." He then returned the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother, and his mother said, "I wholly dedicate the silver from my hand to the L-RD for my son to make a graven image and a molten image; now therefore, I will return them to you." So when he returned the silver to his mother, his mother took two hundred pieces of silver and gave them to the silversmith who made them into a graven image and a molten image, and they were in the house of Mikhah. And the man Mikhah had a shrine and he made an ephod and household idols and consecrated one of his sons, that he might become his priest. In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.

Every man did what was right in his own eyes - Idolatry in Efrayim crept in because there was no leadership. They needed a King. This need points to the fulfillment by the Messiah Yeshua.

Shof’tim 17:7-13 Now there was a young man from Beit-Lechem in Y’hudah, of the family of Y’hudah, who was a Levite; and he was staying there. Then the man departed from the city, from Beit-Lechem in Y’hudah, to stay wherever he might find a place; and as he made his journey, he came to the hill country of Efrayim to the house of Mikhah. And Mikhah said to him, "Where do you come from?" And he said to him, "I am a Levite from Beit-Lechem in Y’hudah, and I am going to stay wherever I may find a place." Mikhah then said to him, "Dwell with me and be a father and a priest to me, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year, a suit of clothes, and your maintenance." So the Levite went in. And the Levite agreed to live with the man; and the young man became to him like one of his sons. So Mikhah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in the house of Mikhah. Then Mikhah said, "Now I know that the L-RD will prosper me, seeing I have a Levite as priest."

Just because Mikhah had a Levite for a priest he thought the L-rd would be good to him. The Levite had compromised truth for room and board. How many are like this today? How many compromise the truth and are afraid to tell the truth because they do not want to be cast out from a nice lifestyle or even to be cast out from a good family or neighborhood? They want the L-rd to bless them but they still want to do things their way and defy Him to rule over their lives on what is right or wrong. Sometimes following G-d means ridicule and shame and sometimes if it may mean less companions. What man thinks doesn’t matter when it comes to truth. We must study the Word, dividing the truth from error.

1 Yochanan (John) 4:4-6 You are from G-d, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from G-d; he who knows G-d listens to us; he who is not from G-d does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

It says in the end times many would find teachers for themselves that would tickle the ears but still do wrong and they will do what is right in their own eyes. You may have religious observances and still not be right with the L-rd.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.

If religious observance keeps you from seeing the truth of “the word” the L-rd will allow it but don’t expect that you are still close to the L-rd. He requires total obedience. Ignorance is only an excuse after a time when you should have searched and asked for guidance. We cannot even just keep the religious observances of the Tanakh without coming to know what they try to tell us and whom they point to and what we should do about it personally. In the future some will observe the commands of what is required to build and consecrate the temple but the L-rd will still not be close or present because they will fail to recognize Yeshua Ha Mashiach. To endure sound doctrine one must be willing to follow the Spirit and find out what the L-rd wants us not to do. The L-rd wants us to study the Mosaic system because it points us to a full understanding about His son and how we can accomplish complete union with the L-rd G-d of Israel through the Son. We then have The Father forever and ever and we will abide with Him.

1 Yochanan (John) 2:21-25 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but the one who denies that Yeshua is the Messiah? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
