The corresponding letter to this chapter is Tahv – truth; perfection
Shof’tim 21:1-4 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mitzpah, saying, "None of us shall give his daughter to Binyamin in marriage." So the people came to Beit-El and sat there before G-d until evening, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. And they said, "Why, O L-RD, G-d of Israel, has this come about in Israel, so that one tribe should be missing today in Israel?" And it came about the next day that the people arose early and built an altar there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
I don’t think that this oath to not give their daughters to the Binyamin was necessarily G-d ordained. The final verse of the chapter tells us that every one did what was right in their own eyes.
Shof’tim 21:5-7 Then the sons of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up in the assembly to the L-RD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the L-RD at Mitzpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death." And the sons of Israel were sorry for their brother Binyamin and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel today. What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the L-RD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?" The other tribes do not want to break their oath but at the same time they do not want to see the tribe die out due to no women. So they devised a plan.
Shof’tim 21:8-12 And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the L-RD at Mitzpah?" And look, no one had come to the camp from Yavesh-Gil’ad to the assembly. For when the people were numbered, look, not one of the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gil’ad was there. And the congregation sent 12,000 of the valiant warriors there, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gil’ad with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones. And this is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every man and every woman who has lain with a man." And they found among the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gil’ad 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Kena’an.
It was taken as an insult that the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gil’ad did not show up to fight against Binyamin so they were attacked. They took virgins from the city as wives for Binyamin.
The Messiah will not harm 144.000 virgins: 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes.
Revelation 7:2-8 And I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living G-d; and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the bond-servants of our God on their foreheads." And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred and forty-four thousand sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: from the tribe of Y’hudah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Re’uven twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naftali twelve thousand, from the tribe of M’nasheh twelve thousand, from the tribe of Shimon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Yissakhar twelve thousand, from the tribe of Z’vulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Yosef twelve thousand, from the tribe of Binyamin, twelve thousand were sealed.
Revelation 14:1-4 Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father's name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being first fruits to G-d and to the Lamb.
Mattityahu (Matthew) 25:1-13 "Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom. "And five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. "For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. "Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. "But at midnight there was a shout, 'Look, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' "Then all those virgins rose, and trimmed their lamps. "And the foolish said to the prudent, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' "But the prudent answered, saying, 'No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.' "And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. "And later the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, lord, open up for us.' "But he answered and said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.' "Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.
Shof’tim 21:13-18 Then the whole congregation sent word and spoke to the sons of Binyamin who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them. And Binyamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had kept alive from the women of Yavesh-Gil’ad; yet they were not enough for them. And the people were sorry for Binyamin because the L-RD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Binyamin?" And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Binyamin, that a tribe may not be blotted out from Israel. But we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the sons of Israel had sworn, saying, "Cursed is he who gives a wife to Binyamin."
Even with the 400 virgins from Yavesh-Gil’ad there were not enough women for the men of Binyamin. So the other tribes suggest a way for the men of Binyamin to get a Jewish bride.
Shof’tim 21:19-24 So they said, "Look, there is a feast of the L-RD from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north side of Beit-El, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Beit-El to Shechem, and on the south side of Levonah." And they commanded the sons of Binyamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, and watch; and look, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to take part in the dances, then you shall come out of the vineyards and each of you shall catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Binyamin. And it shall come about, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we shall say to them, 'Give them to us voluntarily, because we did not take for each man of Binyamin a wife in battle, nor did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'" And the sons of Binyamin did so, and took wives according to their number from those who danced, whom they carried away. And they went and returned to their inheritance, and rebuilt the cities and lived in them. And the sons of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and each one of them went out from there to his inheritance.
Yeshua looks for his bride who will feast at the marriage supper of the Lamb and be carried away to the city above.
Revelation 19:7-9 "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." And it was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. And he said to me, "Write, 'Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'" And he said to me, "These are true words of G-d."
1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 For this we say to you by the word of the L-rd, that we who are alive, and remain until the coming of the L-rd, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the L-rd Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of G-d; and the dead in Messiah shall rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the L-rd in the air, and thus we shall always be with the L-rd. Therefore comfort one another with these words.
Revelation 21:2-7 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from G-d, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Look, the tabernacle of G-d is among men, and He shall dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and G-d Himself shall be among them, and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away. " And He who sits on the throne said, "Look, I am making all things new." And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." And He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alph and the Tahv, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. "He who overcomes shall inherit these things, and I will be his G-d and he will be My son.
Shof’tim 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
The book of Shof’tim (Judges) ends with these words. This statement has been made before and really describes the times they lived in.
As we move into the book of Sh’muel Alef (Samuel I) we will see how Israel does with an earthly King.
