The corresponding letter to this chapter is Vav- hook; redemption and transformation. Stands for man created on the sixth day, etc.
Shof’tim 6:1-6 Then the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the L-RD; and the L-RD gave them into the hands of Midian seven years. And the power of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of Midian the sons of Israel made for themselves the dens which were in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. For it was when Israel had sown, that the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the sons of the east and go against them. So they would camp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel as well as no sheep, ox, or donkey. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, they would come in like locusts for number, both they and their camels were innumerable; and they came into the land to devastate it. So Israel was brought very low because of Midian, and the sons of Israel cried to the L-RD.
The L-rd is trying to get the attention of Israel. When we go wayward the L-rd wants us to come to Him. He waits for us and wants to have more than religious observances once a week. He wants to have a close personal relationship with us. Even when we go astray He longs for us to turn back to Him. This is when we need to even be closer to Him and need His strength the most. Not unlike the physical battles you see here, with His power and help can we overcome in spiritual battles as well. Nothing in our lives will totally satisfy us except for a personal relationship with Him. If you enter the other world and you do not like Yeshua, it will not be a happy place for you. Why? Because, Yeshua will be center and focus of everyone and everything there. He will be the constant focus of glory and praise. He is the one who brought us victory over our fallen nature.
We thank you Father for allowing your son to die for us and thank you that He conquered sin and death for us. Thank you that one day He will reign without end and we will no longer have to worry about having a King who is not righteous or a King that can do any wrong. Praise the Father, the Son, and Ruach HaKodesh!
Hear O Israel, the L-rd your G-d, the L-rd is still ONE!
Back to Midian:
Shof’tim 6:7-10 Now it came about when the sons of Israel cried to the L-RD on account of Midian, that the L-RD sent a prophet to the sons of Israel, and he said to them, "Thus says the L-RD, the G-d of Israel, 'It was I who brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out from the house of slavery. 'And I delivered you from the hands of the Egyptians and from the hands of all your oppressors, and dispossessed them before you and gave you their land, and I said to you, "I am the L-RD your G-d; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But you have not obeyed Me."' "
A prophet is sent to the Israelites to pronounce judgment on them for their actions.
Shof’tim 6:11 Then the “angel of the L-RD” came and sat under the oak that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press in order to save it from the Midianites.
The angel of the L-rd, sitting under the oak, is symbolic of the stone under the oak, who will be a witness against them. Just as Y’hoshua had prophesied!
Y’hoshua 24:26-27 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of G-d; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the L-RD. And Joshua said to all the people, "Behold, this stone shall be for a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the L-RD which He spoke to us; thus it shall be for a witness against you, lest you deny your G-d."
1 Corinthians 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Messiah.
The Angel of the L-rd will one day be King. Interestingly, another King would be anointed under an oak tree.
Shof’tim 9:6 And all the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar which was in Shechem.
And a parable talks about, ”once the trees went forth to anointing a king.”
Judges 9:8 Once the trees went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us!'
Gideon beat wheat in the wine press privately so the Midianites would not find the wheat. We must also realize that Gideon is another type of Messiah. Gideon’s coming battle is representative of a future battle by the Messiah. Gideon beating the wheat is symbolic of Yeshua disciplining people. People are representative of wheat in scripture. The wine press of His wrath is spoken of in the Messiah’s coming battle in Revelation.
Revelation 14:15-20 And another angel came out of the temple, crying out with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, "Put in your sickle and reap, because the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe." And He who sat on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth; and the earth was reaped. And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. And another angel, the one who has power over fire, came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, "Put in your sharp sickle, and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe." And the angel swung his sickle to the earth, and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of G-d. And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses' bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.
We will see much more of this in the coming battle and how it hooks and corresponds to the future battle of the Messiah.
Back to Gideon:
Shof’tim 6:12-13 And the angel of the L-RD appeared to him and said to him, "The L-RD is with you, O valiant warrior." Then Gideon said to him, "O my lord, if the L-RD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, 'Did not the L-RD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the L-RD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian."
Remember the Angel of the L-rd is Yeshua making a pre-Bethlehem appearance.
Shof’tim 6:14 And the L-RD(YHWH) looked at him and said, "Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?"
Gideon is talking to the “Angel of the L-rd” and the L-rd looks at him and replies. This is no mistake. Here we have clear evidence that the “Angel of the L-rd” as the L-rd (YHWH) Himself.
Shof’tim 6:15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? look, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.
In humility Gideon declares his weakness. We should do the same.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Messiah may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Messiah's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
The L-rd G-d uses the weak and least of this world.
1 Corinthians 1:27-29 but G-d has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and G-d has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised, G-d has chosen, the things that are not, that He might nullify the things that are, that no man should boast before G-d.
Back to Gideon:
Shof’tim 6:16 But the L-RD said to him, "Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man."
The L-rd uses us regardless of our weaknesses. Again, when we are weak, He is strong.
Shof’tim 6:17-18 So Gideon said to Him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who speak with me. Please do not depart from here, until I come back to You, and bring out my offering and lay it before You." And He said, "I will remain until you return."
Who is The Angel of the L-rd? Can you see the connection? Surely you Know! Yeshua HaMashiach! The L-rd G-d is still One however!
Gideon is having trouble believing that he is really talking to the Almighty. So he asks for a sign. He also wants to offer a sacrifice to Him. WORSHIPPING the Angel of the L-rd is implied in the text. This angel must be G-d Himself, because He allows Gideon to make an offering and even provides the fire.
Shof’tim 6:19-23 Then Gideon went in and prepared a kid and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour; he put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, and brought them out to him under the oak, and presented them. And the angel of G-d said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so. Then the angel of the L-RD put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the L-RD vanished from his sight. When Gideon saw that he was the angel of the L-RD, he said, "Alas, O L-rd G-D! For now I have seen the angel of the L-RD face to face." And the L-RD said to him, "Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die."
Why was he concerned about dying? No one is supposed to see the L-rd and live. His glory can kill a man just by looking at Him. Why unleavened bread and meat. Do you see the hook or connection here? This points to the one who is our victor. The only way Gideon could be victorious was not who He was but who The Angel of the L-rd was. In the same manner, we can only receive eternal life if we claim the victory through the Messiah Yeshua. All we have to do is cry out to the Father in the Spirit to gain favor again and receive the Spirit of His Son in your hearts and the redemption that comes through Him.
Galatians 4:4-6 But when the fullness of the time had come, G-d sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, G-d has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
He is the unleavened bread in the temple and He is the flesh, which we must eat and is appointed for those that love the father.
Yochanan (John) 6:47-58 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. "I am the bread of life. "Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. "This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread also which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh." The Jews therefore began to argue with one another, saying, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" Yeshua therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink."He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me. "This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate, and died, he who eats this bread shall live forever."
This is a hard thing for those of the flesh to understand but those whom the father wants to be lead will see and understand.
Revelation 19:10 I am a fellow servant of yours and your brothers who hold the testimony of Yeshua; worship G-d. For the testimony of Yeshua is the spirit of prophecy."
Gideon built an altar:
Shof’tim 6:24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the L-RD and named it The L-RD is Peace. (YHWH SHALOM) To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
The L-rd is Shalom as Isaiah had predicted of Yeshua Ha Messiah our L-rd too:
Isaiah 9:6-7 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful (Pele), Counselor(ya’ ats), Mighty G-d(‘el-strong; can also mean G-d. In this case we can see that it does means G-d), Eternal Father, Prince of Shalom. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of shalom, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore.
He is our peace now with the Father and will be our peace with all the nations in the future. Do you see the hook or connection? Wait and we will see.
Back to Gideon:
Shof’tim 6:25-32 Now the same night it came about that the L-RD said to him, "Take your father's bull and a second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal which belongs to your father, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it; and build an altar to the L-RD your G-d on the top of this stronghold in an orderly manner, and take a second bull and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you will cut down. " Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the L-RD had spoken to him; and it came about, because he was too afraid of his father's household and the men of the city to do it by day, that he did it by night. When the men of the city arose early in the morning, look, the altar of Baal was torn down, and the Asherah which was beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar which had been built. And they said to one another, "Who did this thing?" And when they searched about and inquired, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash did this thing." Then the men of the city said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has torn down the altar of Baal, and indeed, he has cut down the Asherah which was beside it."1 But Joash said to all who stood against him, "Will you contend for Baal, or will you deliver him? Whoever will plead for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has torn down his altar." Therefore on that day he named him Jerubbaal, that is to say, "Let Baal contend against him," because he had torn down his altar.
The people had gone so far away from the L-rd that they desired to kill Gideon because he had destroyed their idol and the alter to Baal. Gideon knew this crowd. Is it any wonder that he worked under cover of darkness?
Joash makes a good point. He suggests this powerless god defend himself. He renames his son. “Jerubbaal”. He must have been very proud of his son.
Shof’tim 6:33-39 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the sons of the east assembled themselves; and they crossed over and camped in the valley of Jezreel. So the Spirit of the L-RD came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called together to follow him. And he sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and they also were called together to follow him; and he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they came up to meet them. Then Gideon said to G-d, "If You wilt deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken, look, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I will know that You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken. " And it was so. When he arose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece, he drained the dew from the fleece, a bowl full of water. Then Gideon said to G-d, "Do not let your anger burn against me that I may speak once more; please let me make a test once more with the fleece, let it now be dry only on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the ground."
G-d was compassionate and patient enough to give Gideon another sign without getting angry. He also gives us many signs about the truth of His Son by studying His word in B’rit Hadashah and the Tanakh before we receive judgment for our lack of faith is weak.
2 Peter 3:9 The L-rd is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Back to the fleece:
Shof’tim 6:40 And G-d did so that night; for it was dry only on the fleece, and dew was on all the ground.
Gideon is another type. Yeshua (“The Angel of the L-rd”) will judge the nations in the valley of Jehoshaphat in the future.
Joel 3:11-17 Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations, And gather yourselves there. Bring down, O L-RD, your mighty ones. Let the nations be aroused And come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat,(YHWH judges) For there I will sit to judge All the surrounding nations. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full; The vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the L-RD is near in the valley of decision. The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars lose their brightness. And the L-RD roars from Zion And utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the heavens and the earth tremble. But the L-RD is a refuge for His people And a stronghold to the sons of Israel. Then you will know that I am the L-RD your G-d, Dwelling in Zion My holy mountain. So Jerusalem will be holy, And strangers will pass through it no more.
