First John Chapter 2

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I to you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Yeshua HaMashiach the righteous one:

Sin is daily conquered through Ruach HaKodesh. If we do sin we have an advocate for us. Our advocate (defense attorney) is Yeshua himself. He goes before the Father and pleads our case. Our only plea is that His blood has atoned for our sins. Nothing else will satisfy.

When we studied Zechariah chapter 3 we saw Yeshua acting as the advocate.

This is not an excuse for habitual sin.

1 John 2:2 And He is the propitiation (satisfaction) for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Propitiation is another term for mercy seat.

He died for the whole world. However, not all in the world accepts Him and they reject His Love.

The Second letter is “Beit” - house, duality as in husband and wife. Division between good and evil.

1 John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.

We keep His commandments out of Love for Him and what He has done for us.

1 John 2:4 He that says, I know Him, and keeps not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him.

One who continues to disobey G-d does not really love Him or can continue to have fellowship with Him. Why would you want to continue to hurt G-d in this way?

1 John 2:5 But who keeps His word, in him verily is the love of G-d perfected: thereby we know that we are in Him.

We continue to trust in what the Word says and stand on the integrity of G-d. He then will indwell us.

1 John 2:6 He that says he abides in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.

We need to do more than talk the talk; but also walk the walk of Love.

He showed love to all and love was willing to declare the truth.

1 John 2:7 Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment, which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word, which you have heard from the beginning.

The gospel (Good News) had to accepted by all. All the way back to Adam.

1 John 2:8 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines.

(not “new” as in time)

1 John 2:9 He that says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness even until now.

Your fruit gives you away.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Ruach (Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1 John 2:10-11 He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in Him. But he that hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and knows not where he goes, because that darkness has blinded his eyes.

If you say you don’t have to accept Yeshua to reach the other world you are in darkness and do not know where you are going. This is a lie that has blinded your eyes.

1 John 2:12 I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake.

Under the name of Yeshua our sins are forgiven. The father commanded this.

Again we see the difference between good and evil.

1 John 2:13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known Him that is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, because you have known the Father.

We are a family and children of G-d. We are separate from the children of the evil one. Three stages of growth: fathers, young men, and little children. This is not referring to physical but spiritual growth.

1 John 2:14 I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him that is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of G-d abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Sin falls in to these three categories:

  1. The lust of the flesh
  2. The lust of the eyes
  3. The pride of life

1 John 2:17 And the world passes away, and the lust of it: but he that does the will of G-d abides forever.

Proverbs 22:4 By humility and the fear of the L-RD are riches, and honor, and life.
