First John Chapter 3

1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the sons of G-d: therefore the world knows us not, because it knew Him not.

If you do not know the son you don’t know the Father either. The world rejects Him and those that follow Him.

It is amazing the great love the Father has for us that He would adopt us in to His family!

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of G-d, and it does not yet appear what we will be: but we know that, when He will appear, we shall be like Him; for we will see Him as He is.

He was our firstfruit. We will not be little gods but we will become perfection one day. Keeping the instructions of G-d never promised perfection.

1 John 3:3 And every man that has this hope in Him purifies himself, even as He is pure.

When we are focusing on G-d and not ourselves we are focusing on the perfect example of loving kindness and mercy. What you dwell on will be reflected in your life. There is an expression “Garbage in - Garbage out” if we feed on the garbage of this world it will be evident in our lifestyle. If we spend time with G-d others will know it by our life style. This does not mean we do not get mad because there is a thing as righteous anger.

1 John 3:4 - 5 Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And you know that He was manifested to TAKE AWAY our sins; and in Him is no sin.

Adam was sinless and a type of the second Adam (Yeshua) who is also sinless. We inherit our sin nature from our father. Yeshua had no earthly father, and therefore did not inherit the sin nature. His was a divine nature. Yeshua’s genealogy recorded in Luke is His mother’s (Miriam’s) line that can be traced back to Adam thus showing His human nature.

1 John 3:6 Whosoever abides in Him sins not: whosoever sins has not seen Him, neither known Him.

In verse 4 “commits sin” and here “sins not” is referring to “habitual sin”. A true believer in Yeshua will not have a “lifestyle of sin”

We cannot continue to have a relationship with G-d if we continue in habitual sin.

1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

Faith without works is dead.

1 John 3:8 He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of G-d was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

“Commits sin” - Again this is speaking of habitually practicing sin”.

“The devil” - means accuser or slanderer. Satan, the devil, is the chief fallen angel and the father of sin.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel.

1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of G-d (John 3:7 born again) does not commit sin; for His seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of G-d.

Commit sin - “habitually practice”

This does not mean we are sinless now because that would contradict the scripture in 1 John 1:8 that says: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

It means we will not want to sin because we have a new nature and want to be in the house of G-d above.

1 John 3:10 In this the children of G-d are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness is not of G-d, neither he that loves not his brother.

If we talk the talk and don’t walk the walk what we say is nothing. If you hate others because of their skin or faith you can babble all you want. If you do not do it with the spirit of love you are only a gong that people do not want to hear.

1 John 3:11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

This came down from the law and the prophets. Cf. Matt 5
