In the following verses we learn about the victorious life of the believer in Yeshua. We will see three characteristics that all true believers in Yeshua will have.
1 John 5:1-5 Whoever believes that (Yeshua is HaMashiach) Jesus is the Christ is born of G-d: and every one that loves Him that begot loves Him also loves His offspring.
The term believes conveys the idea of continuing faith. A sign of a true believer is that they continue in the faith through out their life. Saving faith is not simply intellectual acceptance but whole-hearted dedicated to Yeshua that is permanent.
Born of G-d - this is a reference to the new birth.
Yeshua said in John 3:7 You should not be surprised at My saying, `You must be born again.' The Spirit of G-d then indwells in us as it did in the Holy of Holies.
The fifth letter is Hay - breath; Spirit of G-d. Five is also the number of Grace or Mercy. We cannot boast in our works for our eternal salvation. It only comes through His mercy. All we have to do is trust HIM and His Word.
Saving faith is the first characteristic.
Loves Him …loves His offspring. - True believers in Yeshua will Love G-d and Love their fellow Believers through the power of Ruach Ha Kodesh. It does not come from self. We cannot boast in our power to love completely. It is a love that passes all understanding.
Love is the second characteristic.
1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of G-d, when we love G-d, and keep His commandments.
Keep His commandments - If we have saving faith we will have love for the Father. If we have love for the Father we will be obedient to Him. Is this something G-d requires? It shouldn’t have to be. We freely give our love and obedience to Him.
Obedience is the third characteristic.
Yeshua said in Matthew 11:30 for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matthew 22:37-40 Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, you will love the L-rd your G-d with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it; you will love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
1 John 5:3 For this is the love of G-d, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not burdensome.
Many religious groups through out the ages have added to the commandments of G-d. Some have placed unnecessary burdens on their followers that were simply not what G-d intended. (See Matt 23:1-12)
It is more grievous for us to continue to hurt G-d and our relationship with Him.
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of G-d overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.
Overcomes - comes from the Greek word “to conquer”, “to have victory”, “to have superiority”, or “conquering power”. New Covenant power.
The world - This is a reference to Satan’s kingdom.
Satan is referred to as “the god of this world” in 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them, which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Mashiach (Christ), who is the image of G-d, should shine unto them.
We are only victorious through Him. G-d is our power only through faith or trust. He is our eternal salvation through trusting in Him alone. Through the power of G-d we overcome the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. (1 John 2:16)
1 John 5:5 Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Son of G-d?
Yeshua said He had overcome the world. Was He blessed with long physical life by loving others? No. It was not of this world. For his time of rule in this world was not to be yet. Like Moshe He was to leave for a time and later return to pronounce judgment on a hardhearted people.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
We follow His example through new covenant power, which is though the power of G-d. In this life we may not see the rewards of our obedience. Our rewards are above. The first in this world may be the last in the other world. The last in this world may be placed first in the other world. We will all have various positions to fill and will rule with Him according to our obedience. His kingdom will also be on earth as it is in heaven (or the other world).
Arise, O G-d, judge the earth; for you will inherit all nations. (Psalms 82:6)
1 John 5:6-9 This is He that came by water (immersion) and blood (death), even (Yeshua HaMashiach) Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit (Ruach) that bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
When Yeshua was baptized, the Father and Ruach HaKodesh affirmed His deity.
Luke 3:22 And Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.
When His died on the execution stake His deity was again reconfirmed.
Matt 27:50-55 And Yeshua (Jesus) cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Yeshua (Jesus), saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of G-d!"
This refutes “dualism”, the idea that Yeshua’s G-d spirit departed from the man Yeshua before His death.
The Torah required the testimony of two or three witnesses.
Deuteronomy 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, the matter will be established.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in HEAVEN, the Father, the Word (Yeshua), and (Ruach HaKodesh) the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.
This is a reference to the tri-unity of G-d.
1 John 5:8-9 And there are three that bear witness in EARTH, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of G-d is greater: for this is the witness of G-d, which He has testified of His Son.
