Second John Chapter 1

The entire book of second John, is only 13 verses!

This is another letter written by the apostle John. It is probably written about the same time as first John and deals with the same subject. False teachers influenced by Gnostic thought were influencing the early believers.

2 John 1:1 The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

John refers to himself as the elder, indicating his advanced age at this time, and also his spiritual authority over the congregations.

This letter is directed to a particular person a lady. Some erroneously associate “the lady” to a particular church.

This may have been a lady who was showing hospitality in the church who came upon the Gnostics of her day. Gnostics where ones who thought they have special knowledge the church did not have. She was asking what she should do about it and gets an answer in v. 10.

2 John 1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwells in us, and will be with us forever.

Yeshua is the truth that dwells in us.

John 14:6 Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Messiah (Christ): nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Messiah (Christ) lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of G-d, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

These verses tell us that Yeshua is the truth and that when we accept Him as our Messiah that He dwells within us.

He will be with us forever.

Hebrews 13:5”…for He has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

This covenant is eternal and unconditional. It relies on G-d’s mercy alone.

2 John 1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from G-d the Father, and from the L-rd (Yeshua the Messiah) Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

G-d is love. Because of His love G-d is rich in mercy.

Mercy is that in G-d, which provided for the need of sinful man. In other words, G-d loved us so much that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish (eternal separation from G-d), but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Grace is that in G-d, which acts freely, to save because all the demands of holiness have been satisfied in the death burial and resurrection of Yeshua HaMashiach.

The letters of Grace help us to remember its meaning: G-d’s Richs At Christ’s (Messiah’s) Expense

Peace (Shalom) - We can only know true peace when we have experienced G-d’s Mercy and Grace.

2 John 1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of the children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

Don’t just say it, WALK It. It is easy to say you love others but then turn around a treat others badly.

2 John 1:5 And now I beseech you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

The beginning - refers to the beginning of the Ministry of Yeshua.

Yeshua said in John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commandments.”

2 John 1:6 And this is love that we walk after His commandments. This is the commandment, that, as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

The 10 commandments are basic to government and to civilization. Followers of Yeshua are called to a higher plan.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

If we are exhibiting these characteristics, then we are following His commandments.
