Mattityahu (Matthew) Chapter 1

Some may read the first 17 verses of Mattityahu (Matthew) and find them to be extremely boring just a bunch of names of guys who died thousands of years ago. But they are extremely important.

Each chapter in the book of Matthew cooresponds to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The first letter "Aleph" refers to head, as in Creator, King; the head of a bull appointed for sacrifice, etc.

This is Yeshua’s genealogy. It proves that He is heir to the throne of David and that He is qualified to be the Mashiach. If His genealogy does not pass inspection, we must reject Him as our Mashiach and King!

The Coming of the King (Matthew Chapter 1 - 2)

Matthew 1:1 This is the genealogy of Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus Christ), the Son of David, the Son of Avraham (Abraham):

This follows the design in the book of Genesis where we have the generations of Adam. We will continue to mention sporadically how the structure of the New Covenant links with the structure of the Torah. This section we are currently studying of Yeshua’s life corresponds with Genesis. Interesting!!

Also how does Yeshua’s birth correspond to the creation of Adam?

Yeshua was the “seed of the women” promised to Eve in:

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.

What Adam lost, Yeshua will restore.

In Genesis 22:18 we read that the Messiah was to be a descendant of Avraham.

“And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”

Matthew 1:2 Avraham begot Yitz’chak (Isaac),

The line would pass through Yitz’chak.

Genesis 21:12 “But G-d said to Avraham, ‘Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Yitz’chak your descendants shall be named.

Yitz’chak begot Ya’akov (Jacob),

The line would pass through Ya’akov.

Genesis 28:14 “Your descendants shall also be like dust of the earth, and you shall spread out to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

and Ya’akov begot Y’hudah (Judah) and his brothers.

In Genesis 49:10 we learn that:

“The scepter shall not depart from Y’hudah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to Him shall be the obedience of the peoples.”

Shiloh is a reference to the Mashiach.

Matthew 1:3 Y’hudah begot Peretz (Perez) and Zerach (Zerah) by Tamar,

It was unusual for women to be listed in a genealogy at this time. Matthew however, listed five women. As we continue through this chapter we will see the women he chose to list had questionable pasts. Each is a lesson in the workings of divine grace.

Tamar is the first woman listed in Yeshua’s genealogy. She was a Canaanite woman who posed as a prostitute to seduce Y’hudah (Gen 38:13-30)

Peretz begot Hetzon,

and Hezron begot Ram.

Matthew 1:4 Ram begot Amminadav (Amminadab),

Amminadav begot Nachshon (Nahshon),

and Nachshon begot Salmon.

Matthew 1:5 Salmon begot Boaz by (Rachav) Rahab,

Rachav is the second woman listed in Yeshua’s genealogy. Rachav was a gentile and a prostitute. (Joshua 2:1)

Boaz begot Oved (Obed) by Rut (Ruth),

Rut is the third woman listed in Yeshua’s genealogy. She was a Moabite woman and her offspring were forbidden to enter the assembly of the L-rd for 10 generations. (Ruth 1:3) (Deut 23:3)

Oved begot Yishai (Jesse),

In Isaiah 11:1-2,10 we learn that the Mashiach will be from the house of Yishai.

“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Yishai, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the L-RD shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the L-RD,…And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and His rest shall be glorious.”

The Branch is a reference to the Mashiach.

Matthew 1:6 and Yishai begot David the king.

In Second Samuel 7:12-13 we learn the line will pass through David.

“When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”

David the king begot Shlomo (Solomon) by her who had been the wife of Uriyah (Uriah).

Bathsheba is the fourth woman listed in Yeshua’s genealogy. She was the wife of Uriyah and committed adultery with David. (2 Sam 11)

Matthew 1:7 Shlomo begot Rechav’am (Rehoboam),

Rechav’am begot Aviyah (Abijah),

and Aviyah begot Asa.

Matthew 1:8 Asa begot Y’hoshafat (Jehoshaphat),

Y’hoshafat begot Yoram (Joram),

and Yoram begot Uziyahu (Uzziah).

Matthew 1:9 Uziyahu begot Yotam (Jotham),

Yotam begot Achaz (Ahaz),

and Achaz begot Hizkiyahu (Hezekiah).

Matthew 1:10 Hizkiyahu begot M’nasheh (Manasseh),

M’nasheh begot Amon,

and Amon begot Yoshiyahu (Josiah).

Matthew 1:11 Yoshiyahu begot Y’khanyahu (Jeconiah) and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Bavel (Babylon).

Some people point to this verse as proof that Yeshua cannot be the Mashiach.

They compare it to:

Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 22:28-30 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? Is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? Wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not? O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the L-RD. Thus says the L-RD, Write this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

Here Y’khanyahu’s (Jeconiah), also known as Coniah, line was recorded as cut off from the throne. This does not mean he was childless, just that his descendants (seed) were not able to inherit the throne of David.

And they would be correct in their claim if Yeshua were the biological son of Yosef. However, if you read down to verse 16 you will see it says:

Matthew 1:16 And Ya’akov begot Yosef (Joseph) the husband of Miryam (Mary), of whom was born Yeshua (Jesus) who is called Mashaich (Christ).

This is Joseph's genealogy. It does not say that Yeshua (Jesus) was born to Joseph as it does of the previous people listed in the genealogy. Yosef (Joseph) was NOT Yeshua's biological father. He was Yeshua’s stepfather. Matthew shows the royal line passing through Yosef (Joseph). Because Yeshua (Jesus) was the legal child of Yosef (Joseph) by adoption, He would have all the rights and as if He was Yosef's (Joseph's) biological son. So, Yeshua (Jesus) has the legal right to reign through Yosef. If he was Yosef's biological child, he would not have been able to reign because of Jeremiah 22:28-30. The curse did NOT pass on to Yeshua. This adoption also illustrates what Moshe said in Deut. 18:18 about being like him. How? Moshe was the adopted son of Pharaoh and was given all the privileges. Also He later rejected the throne and it’s privileges…. Yeshua also rejected the throne until a later time.

Heb 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of G-d, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Messiah (Christ) greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.

In Luke 3:23-38, Yeshua's (Jesus) mother Miryam’s (Mary's) genealogy is recorded. Pay attention to verse 23.

"and when He began His ministry, Yeshua (Jesus) Himself was about thirty years of age, being supposedly the son of (Yosef) Joseph, the son of Eli"

Notice Josef (Joseph), is listed here as the son of Eli and in Matthew as the son of Ya’akov (Jacob). A better translation would be son-in-law of Eli. This is Miryam’s (Yeshua's Mother's) genealogy.

Luke 3:31 … which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,

As you can see, Miryam’s line comes through David's son Nathan not Solomon! Is it not true that a person gets their Jewishness from their mother and not their father? Yeshua is qualified to ascend to the throne of David based on His mother's unblemished genealogy.

Matthew 1:12 And after they were brought to Babylon,

Y’khanyahu (Jeconiah) begot Sh’altiel (Shealtiel),

and Sh’altiel begot Z’rubavel (Zerubbabel).

Matthew 1:13 Z’rubavel begot Avihud (Abiud),

Avihud begot Elyakim (Eliakim),

and Elyakim begot Azur (Azor).

Matthew 1:14 Azur begot Tzadok (Zadok),

Tzadok begot Yakhin (Achim),

and Yakhin begot El’ichud (Eliud).

Matthew 1:15 El’ichud begot El’azar (Eleazar),

El’azar begot Mattan (Matthan),

and Mattan begot Ya’akov (Jacob).

Matthew 1:16 And Ya’akov begot Yosef (Joseph) the husband of Miryam (Mary), of whom was born Yeshua (Jesus) who is called Mashaich (Christ).

Miryam is the fifth woman listed in Yeshua’s genealogy. Although she was a virgin, she bore the stigma of pregnancy outside of wedlock.

Notice this does not say that Yosef begot Yeshua. It states that Yosef was the husband of Miryam. Yosef was only Yeshua’s step-father.

Matthew 1:17 So all the generations from Avraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Mashiach (Christ) are fourteen generations.

Seven is the number of completeness in the Bible. Here we have 7+7 = 14 generations listed 3 times.
