Matthew Chapter 24

The Return of the King to Israel (Matthew Chapter 24 - 25)

Matt 24:1-2 Yeshua (Jesus) left the temple and was walking away when His disciples came up to Him to call His attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" He asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

That was a short-term prophecy it was fulfilled in 70 A.D when the Romans destroyed the Temple.

Matt 24:3 As Yeshua (Jesus) was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

Mark tells us that only 4 came to question Him.

Mark 13:3 And as He sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him privately,

This is known as the Olivet Discourse.

This section of Matthew corresponds to Deuteronomy in that we have prophecies concerning the “end of the age.”

It states the sign of His coming and the end of the age. It’s message is similar to Deuteronomy 18:18.

Israel as a nation rejected what the prophet Moshe predicted. We have the destruction of Jerusalem and two thousand years of exile to know that Adonai fulfilled the words Moshe spoke. Adonai required it of Israel.

He also promised to forgive Israel and keep His promises to Israel.

Deuteronomy 30:5 And the L-RD you G-d will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you will possess it; and he will do you good, and multiply you above your fathers.

This is message of hope that corresponds to these closing chapters of Matthew. We have the blessed hope and the blessings to those that are watching. We will finally eventually have a millennium of peace. What a wonderful insight to the book of Matthew and the beautiful Torah design.

The talmidim as Yeshua 3 questions:

  1. When will this happen? (This is referring to Yeshua’s prediction of the destruction of the Temple.)

They probably thought that the Temple would be destroyed at the end of the age and the time of Yeshua’s return prompting them to ask the next two questions.

  2. What will be the sign of your coming?
  3. What will be the sign of the end of the age?

So Yeshua begins to answer their questions…He now gives them a Long-term prophecy. (This happens with prophesy, we have a short-term followed by long term. Ex: Isaiah 61:1-2 the first and second coming.)

Keep in mind that the following signs are signs of Yeshua’s second coming. These are NOT signs of the Rapture. Many of these signs are beginning to occur today. Most of them are events that occur in the Tribulation Period (Known as Daniel’s 70th week, and the time of Jacob’s Trouble). If you look at this passage closely you will find that Yeshua is giving the highlights (a brief overview) of what is to come during the Tribulation period.

Matt 24:4-5 And (Yeshua) Jesus answered and said to them, Watch out that no man deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, I am the Messiah (Christ); and will deceive many.

This happens today. You come across some who claim they are the Messiah or Christ. The falling away from sound doctrine and knowing truth from error is prevalent in these times.

Matt 24:6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that you be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

What we hear today is only a little taste of what will come during this time.

Matt 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there will be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Nation again Nation - We have that in the news today.

Let’s see SARS, Ebola, Aids, West Nile, Hepatitis, etc. Earthquakes are happening more and more frequently like birth pains. What we have now is just a taste or a shadow of what is to come.

Matt 24:8 All these are the BEGINNING OF SORROWS. (There are three distinct parts, the beginning of sorrows, the tribulation, and the great tribulation.)

Beginning of Sorrows - in the Greek it is “The beginning of birth pains”.

Just as birth pains get closer and closer together and more intense before the baby is born; the signs of Hi coming will get closer and closer together and more and more intense.

Matt 24:9 Then will they deliver you up to be afflicted, and will kill you: and you will be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

Heaven forbid you are a messenger of “so-called” hate and intolerance of other religions.

Matt 24:10 And then will many be offended, and will betray one another, and will hate one another.

What offends people today? The name of Yeshua (Jesus). Don’t use that name at the end of a prayer. That is too intolerant of other religions that don’t believe in Yeshua (Jesus). A believer may even be turned in by his brother, sister, relatives, friends, etc.

They can be intolerant of us using His name though. That is different I suppose. If we are not offended by Him now He will not be offended to declare our name to the Father. (Matt 10:32-39)

Matt 24:11-13 And many false prophets will rise, and will deceive many. And because iniquity will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he that will endure to the end, the same will be saved.

They will be saved physically.

Matt 24:14 And this GOSPEL (Basar) of the kingdom will be preached in all the world for a witness to all nations; and then will the end come.

Maybe all will hear it on CNN when they bring some of the new believers during the tribulation period to the world court for so called hate crimes of intolerance for speaking truth out of love. It is another example of kill or hate the messenger.

Today the good news is taught to the whole world via the Internet, TV, and Radio. During the Tribulation period 144,000 Jewish evangelists will spread the good news of Yeshua through out the world. .

See Revelation 11

Matt 24:15 When you therefore will see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso reads, let him understand:)

Daniel predicted the abomination of desolation.

Dan 9:27 Then he will confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week he will bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations will be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate."

This was a double prophecy it was fulfilled in the past and will be fulfilled in the future by the Anti-Messiah. This following is taken from our book on Daniel.

"The first man came out of the Selecuid kingdom about 175 B.C. His name was Antiochus Epiphanes, which means 'Antiochus, god manifest.' He had 80,000 Jewish people killed. He sold another 40,000 into slavery. He substituted Greek worship and culture for the Jewish religion. Instead of celebrating the feast of Tabernacles, he introduced the feast of Bacchus, the god of pleasure and wine. He forbade the observance of the Sabbath and the reading of the Holy Scriptures. He burned every copy of the Torah he could find and forbade the Jewish people to practice anything Jewish under the penalty of death. He did many, many, horrible things, and the Jewish people called him Antiochus Epimanes, which means 'Antiochus the Madman.'" He stopped the daily sacrifice at the temple and he set up an image of Zeus in the temple. Then he sacrificed a pig on the altar and took the blood and sprayed it all over the inside of the temple. It was 2,300 days from that time until he died and the temple was cleansed and back in use again.

The False Prophet will set up an image of the Anti-messiah in the temple, this will occur at the mid point of the 7-year tribulation period. This is “the abomination of desolation” that Yeshua is speaking about here. This is described in Revelation chapter 13-14. They will require the Anti-Messiah to be worshipped and the it is at this point in time that all the people of the earth will be required to take the mark of the beast as a sign of alliance to the Anti-messiah. ANYONE WHO TAKES THIS MARK WILL BE DAMMED TO SPEND ETERNITY IN THE LAKE OF FIRE (Gehenna).

For more detail, see our notes on these chapters.

Matt 24:16-20 Then let them which are in Judea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! But you pray that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day:

Yeshua is telling them DO NOT STOP TO PACK A BAG! RUN! Run, for your life!!!!

They will probably run to Petra. Petra is located in southern Jordan. It is a natural mountain fortress, with only one very narrow passageway in through the mountains. The passageway is so narrow, it is necessary to walk or ride in on horseback. The widest vehicle able to get in there would be a little Jeep. Once through the narrow passage, there are over ten square miles of fortified land waiting to house a multitude of people. Thousands of years ago, the Nabetians had a city there. They carved buildings into the beautiful red sandstone mountains. It is quite beautiful to see and would make an excellent place for the Jewish people to hide out from the anti-messiah (antichrist).
