Revelation Chapter 13

The Beast

Revelation 13:1-2 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. (KJV)

John sees a beast rising out of the sea.

The Greek word therion (thay-ree'-on) indicates it is a vicious wild beast.

The sea refers to the sea of nations, which is troubled like an ocean with roaring and crashing waves as empires rise, and fall. In Rev 17:15 the "waters" of the sea are explicitly declared to be nations and peoples.

In chapter 12 Satan is symbolized as a dragon with 7 heads and 10 horns. The heads of the dragon are crowned. The dragon's crowns on its heads told us Satan has global domination. Satan comes as the ruler of all of the geographical regions of the earth.

Here this beast has 7 heads and 10 horns but the horns have the crowns not the heads. This is very important, I will explain in a minute. The beast is described as having the body of a leopard, the feet of a bear, and the mouth of a lion. This should sound familiar to you if you have read chapter 7 of Daniel.

This beast represents the world government from the Tribulation period and also the Anti-Messiah who will be over it.

(I don't mean to sound like a broken record, really I don't, but in order to really understand this symbolism you must understand Daniel chapter 7. Again, see our commentary)

Understanding Daniel

The "mouth of a lion" symbolizes the lust to consume victims with great power. The "feet of a bear" symbolizes its great size with armies able to crush rebellions. The "body of a leopard" symbolizes its agility, swiftness; a capacity for military mobility and speed of strike.

In Daniel's vision in Chapter 7, he sees a lion that symbolized the Babylon Empire, a bear that symbolized the Medo-Persian Empire, and a leopard that symbolized the Greek empire. The fourth beast had 10 horns and symbolized the Roman Empire.

Here in Revelation 13 the beast is a combination of all of the previous kingdoms. It represents the revived Roman Empire. The horns represent the same thing as they did in Daniel's vision the 10 Kingdoms of the revived Roman Empire. This beast also represents the Anti-Messiah. The crowns on the horns tell us the Anti-Messiah is the ruler of the Revived Roman Empire.

Many prophecy experts believe the European Community is the revived Roman Empire, represented by the ten horns. I believe it will be something much bigger than the European Community. Something that includes the EC, I believe it will be the new world order, under the direction of the United Nations, which is gaining more power and influence every day.

Each head has a name of blasphemy written on it. Blasphemy is anti-G-d speech. This tells us the empire will be based on wicked principles. Its leader the Anti-Messiah shall blaspheme G-d.

Satan gives the Anti-Messiah his power, position, and authority.
