Revelation Chapter 8

Revelation 8:1-6 "And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels, which stood before G-d; and to them were given seven trumpets. And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before G-d out of the angel's hand. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. (KJV)

Y'shua breaks the 7th seal. There is silence in Heaven for 30 minutes. The contents of this seal are so awesome (terrible) that everyone in heaven is speechless. The silence shows the gravity of the situation. It may be compared to the silence before the foreman of the jury reports a verdict, for a moment of perfect silence and everyone awaits that which will follow. The number 30 in the Bible is often associated with mourning. Israel mourned for 30 days over the death of both Aaron (Num 20:29) and Moses (Deut. 34:8).

The 7th seal contains seven trumpet judgments (Our next Menorah). Seven angels with trumpets prepare to sound.

Another angel with a golden censer offers the prayers of the saints on the alter before G-d. In the Tanakh (Old Testament) the priests would burn incense upon the alter of incense, and the smoke would fill the Temple (or Tabernacle) and would ascend to heaven. Incense was symbolic of worship and prayer. This angel is fulfilling the roll of the High Priest. Some believe it to be Y'shua.

Trumpets were used to summon the people to worship. This will be the function of the trumpet at the rapture. The church will be summoned to worship Almighty G-d. Trumpets were also used as a battle call. These trumpets are calling the angels to battle.

"The clear implication is that the censer is here used as a symbol of judgment, apparently in response to the intercession and prayers of the saints in the midst of the great tribulation." "The Revelation of Jesus Christ" by Walvoord p. 153.

The First Trumpet

Revelation 8:7 "The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up." (KJV)

Hail and fire cast upon the earth. 1/3 part of the trees is burnt up and ALL green grass. (Compare with Ex 9:18-26)

Just think about this plague for a minute. This summer we had a large number of forest fires in the western US and we were short of fire fighters. How could they possibly fight 1/3 of the trees on fire? Imagine the air pollution from the smoke, soil erosion from the lack of grass. I suspect that crops may be burnt up along with the grass. There would be a lack of oxygen from the sudden lack of plants.

Plant life was the first to be created and it will be the first to be destroyed.

This is pretty scary. Imagine hail, fire, and blood falling from heaven.

The Second Trumpet

Revelation 8:8-9 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. (KJV)

A great mountain burning with fire. This was probably John's way of describing an asteroid or a meteor. Here we have 1/3 of the salt water turned to blood, 1/3 of the sea creature's dead, and 1/3 of the ships destroyed.

The probability is that all life and ships are destroyed in the area of the earth nearest to the impact of the great burning mountain.

It seems reasonable that there would be title waves too.

This sounds like the plague against Egypt where the Nile and other bodies of water became blood.
