The corresponding letter to this chapter is Gimel-lovingkindness;culmination, as in planting a seed and caring for it until it matures.
Sh’mu’el Alef 3:1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the L-RD before Eli. And word from the L-RD was rare in those days, visions were infrequent.
The boy Samuel – Samuel was probably a teenager when this occurred.
Word from the L-RD was rare – there was very little revelation during the time of the judges.
Sh’mu’el Alef 3:2-9 And it happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well), and the lamp of G-d had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the L-RD where the ark of G-d was, that the L-RD called Samuel; and he said, "Here I am." Then he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, lie down again." So he went and lay down. And the L-RD called yet again, "Samuel!" So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he answered, "I did not call, my son, lie down again." Now Samuel did not yet know the L-RD, nor had the word of the L-RD yet been revealed to him. So the L-RD called Samuel again for the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli discerned that the L-RD was calling the boy. And Eli said to Samuel, "Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, L-RD, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
Samuel did not yet know the L-RD – At this point in time Samuel has not had a personal relationship with the L-rd. This was about to change.
Samuel naturally thought that Eli was calling him. Eli was slow to figure out that it was the L-rd that was call to him in the temple. This tells us something about Eli’s spiritual condition.
Sh’mu’el Alef 3:10 Then the L-RD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
The L-RD came and stood - This is yet another appearance of Yeshua in the Tanakh.
Sh’mu’el Alef 3:11-14 And the L-RD said to Samuel, "Look, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. In that day I will carry out against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves and he did not rebuke them. And therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever."
Not only was Eli’s sons punished to be punished for their wrong doing BUT also Eli. After all he was the High Priest and he allowed them to serve in the temple when he knew about their sinful lifestyle.
Sh’mu’el Alef 3:15-17 So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the L-RD. But Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. Then Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am." And he said, "What is the word that He spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. May G-d do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the words that He spoke to you."
What if we keep the Word of His Son from others?
We are to do the same when the L-rd G-d calls out to us to tell others His Word- that is “Here I AM” and listen to where He wants us to go and to whom He wants us to tell. The promised seed of Genesis – that is Yeshua, in his loving kindness, said when called by the Father to come down to die for us. He said, “Here I AM”. I will go.
Hebrews 10:3-14 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when Messiah came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. Then I said, `Here I am-it is written about me in the scroll- I have come to do your will, O G-d.'" First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them" (although the law required them to be made). Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Yeshua HaMashiach once for all.
Yochanan (John) 8:28-29 Yeshua therefore said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him."
What is your response when G-d calls you to plant the seed and tell others His word?
Out of loving kindness tell others about the Kingdom of G-d above and how to find it.
Mark 4:30-33 And He said, "How shall we picture the kingdom of G-d, or by what parable shall we present it? "It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil, yet when it is sown, grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that the birds of the air can nest under its shade. " And with many such parables He was speaking the word to them as they were able to hear it;
Samuel was chosen before He was born. So was Yeshua and so are we.
1 Kefa (Peter) 1:20-22 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in G-d, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in G-d.
Ephesians 1:3-6 Blessed be the G-d and Father of our L-rd Yeshua HaMashiach, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Messiah, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Yeshua HaMashiach to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His mercy, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Sh’mu’el Alef 3:18-21 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the L-RD; let Him do what seems good to Him." Thus Samuel grew and the L-RD was with him and let none of his words fail. And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the L-RD. And the L-RD appeared again at Shiloh, because the L-RD revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the L-RD.
