Zechariah Chapter 13

Zechariah 13:1 In that day there will be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

In that day - we are still continuing with the same topic “the day of the L-rd”. In this verse Messiah is on His throne.

“The house of David” represents royalty and “The inhabitants of Jerusalem” represents commoners. All need the forgiveness of sin.

The fountain … for sin and for uncleanness is a symbolic reference to the cleansing and purifying blood of the atoning death of the pierced one in Zech 12:10.

1 John 1:7 … the blood of Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus Christ) His Son cleanses us from all sin.

This reminds me of the words of a song: “There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel’s veins and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.”

The letter that corresponds is the thirteenth letter “Mem” - revelation; revealed (open Mem) and concealed (closed Mem) when used at an end of a sentence. The two mems can represent two aspects of G-d - Kingship and Dominion.

Zechariah 13:2 And it will come to pass in that day, says the L-RD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they will no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

The closed (final) mem can allude to what which is concealed from man. Interestingly we come to the subject of prophets.

Yeshua HaMashiach will clean house. Idols will be removed, false prophets, and demonic (unclean spirits) will be given the boot.

Zechariah 13:3 And it will come to pass, that if any still prophesies, then his father and his mother who begot him will say to him, You will not live; because you have spoken lies in the name of the L-RD: and his father and his mother who begot him will thrust him through when he prophesies.

Because of G-d’s salvation and the love His people will have for Him, the parents of a child who becomes a false prophet will put aside their natural parental feelings toward him and put him to death. (See Deuteronomy chapter 13)

Zechariah 13:4-5 And it will come to pass in that day, that every prophet will be ashamed of his vision, when he prophesies; neither will they wear a rough garment to deceive: But he will say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

Rough garment - A robe of coarse hair.

Because of this punishment false prophets will stop wearing the traditional garments of a false prophet. They will use a clandestine approach to spreading their demonic message. They will lie and say that they were farmers since they were young.

Zechariah 13:6 And one will say to him, What are these wounds in your hands? Then he will answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

The false prophets will be asked about wounds on their arms. It was their custom to cut themselves before their false gods so their wounds will be recognized and questioned.

We see an example of this in the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal.

M’Lakhim Alef (1 Kings) 18:28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

(See also Lev. 19:28; Deut 14:1; Jer. 16:6; 48:37)

The false prophets will make some excuse, saying that he got hurt at a friends house.

Zechariah 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is My Companion, says the L-RD of hosts: strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered: and I will turn my hand upon the little ones.

Here the “L-rd of Hosts” is speaking. He talks about “My shepherd”, who we saw in chapter 11 referred to the Messiah, and He refers to Him as “My Companion”. He is saying the Messiah is His co-equal. Thus, confirming the Messiah’s deity. :~)

The L-rd of Hosts tells us that the sword will come against My Shepherd (Mashiach). He also predicts that when Mashiach is struck, the sheep, talmudim, will scatter.

Yeshua confirmed this prophecy shortly before His death.

Matthew 26:31 Then said Yeshua (Jesus) to them, All of you will be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

The prophecy was fulfilled in Matthew 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

Zechariah 13:8 And it will come to pass, that in all the land, says the L-RD, two-thirds will be cut off and die; but the one-third will be left in it.

Two-thirds of the people of Israel will be cut off from G-d and experience, spiritual death, eternal separation from G-d because they refused to accept Yeshua as their Mashiach. These people will die during the 7-year tribulation, the time of Jacob’s trouble at the hand of the Anti-Messiah. This number will far surpass the death toll of the Holocaust.

Zechariah 13:9 And I will bring the one-third through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they will call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they will say, The L-RD is my G-d.

One-third will still be alive at the 2nd coming of Yeshua HaMashiach. At that time as a nation they will accept Him as their Mashiach. This was described in chapter 12.
