Zechariah Chapter 4

Vision 5 - 4:1-14 Gold Menorah (Lamp stand) and Two Olive Trees

Zechariah 4:1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and woke me, as a man that is awakened out of his sleep,

We are reminded that Zechariah is awake when receiving this message from G-d.

Zechariah 4:2 And he said to me, "What do you see?" And I said, "I see, and behold, a Menorah (lamp stand) all of gold with its bowl on the top of it, and its seven lamps on it with seven spouts belonging to each of the lamps which are on the top of it;

This Menorah is slightly different than the one in the Temple. It has an additional bowl on top of it, which acts as a reservoir, or oil tank, over the seven lamps so that oil flows by gravity into the lamps.

The Menorah in the Tabernacle/Temple needed to have the priests replenish the oil on a daily basis. This Menorah receives a steady supply.

Olive Oil symbolizes Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit). This can bring us to the meaning of Dalet. It can mean a door and also a power that transforms us. Yeshua said He would send Ruach HaKodesh to help us. Our bodies are a vessel that Ruach HaKodesh indwells like it indwells the temple. G-d will work in our lives and transforms us if we surrender to Ruach HaKodesh. I find when I come to end of my own power and strength and learn to surrender myself to Him, I become more what He wants to me to be. We become a vessel or refined instrument were G-d’s power can work through and be used by Him. When we trust on the power of G-d and not our own power there comes a rest and a peace in our lives. Surrender to the power of G-d and allow Him to work this way in your life.

Luke 4:18 Ruach HaKodesh (The Spirit of the L-rd) is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

Acts 10:38 How G-d anointed Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth with Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for G-d was with him.

Hebrews 1:9 You have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore G-d, even your G-d, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.

1 John 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.

The Menorah symbolizes G-d’s witness to the world.

Israel was to be G-d’s representatives to the world.

Deuteronomy 32:8 When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

Israel sits on the land bridge between three continents: Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Ezekiel 5:5 Thus says the L-rd G-D; this is Jerusalem: I have set it in the center of the nations and countries that are round about her.

During the “Time of Jacob’s Trouble” Israel will send forth 144,000 Messianic witnesses through out the earth.

Revelation 7:4-8 "And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Asher were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Naphtali were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasseh were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zebulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.”

The Light symbolizes Yeshua. He is the light of the world. We are also to be a light to the world by witnessing to others about this light.

John 8:12 Again therefore Yeshua (Jesus) spoke to them, saying, "I AM the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Zechariah 4:3 also two olive trees by it, one on the right side of the bowl and the other on its left side."

This is a two-fold prophecy. It has application in Zechariah’s day and also has application in the future.

The image of two olive branches flanking the golden menorah is the symbol of the power behind the rebuilding of the Temple.

In Zechariah’s day the olive trees represented the two leaders of Israel who were instrumental in rebuilding the temple.

Revelation 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the G-d of the earth.

Here we see that they are also called “two candlesticks” The implication is that these two lamps are added to the other seven, making a total of nine lamps - a Hanukkah menorah.

  1. Zerubbabel in the line of David.
  2. Joshua the High Priest

In the future the two olive trees represent the two witnesses in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 11:3-14 "And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they will prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the G-d of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceeded out of their mouth, and devoured their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. And when they will have finished their testimony, the beast that ascended out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and will overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our L-rd was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations will see their dead bodies three days and a half, and will not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, and make merry, and will send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. And after three days and a half the Spirit of life from G-d entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying to them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. And the same hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the G-d of heaven. The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe comes quickly.

It is believed that these two will be Elijah and another prophet. Some believe it will be Enoch or Moses.
